After seeing
Lou Reed more times than I can remember over the last 20 years or so, I have to say last night's performance of the Berlin album may have been the best show yet. And that includes a Velvet Underground reunion show in London, 1993. Stellar from beginning to end. The sound was incredible as was the band, which included names familar to any long time Reed fans:
Steve Hunter,
Fernando Saunders,
Tony Smith, and
Rob Wasserman (yes, they used two basses for most of the set). Also on hand were
Antony, and
Sharon Jones, on back-up vocals. Producer
Hal Wilner conducted, and
Julian Schnabel was filming it. Performing the album beginning to end, everyone above was also helped out by a horn section, a small string section and The Brooklyn Youth Chorus.
(Steve Hunter is my new guitar hero)...The main set was followed by a 3-song encore with a paired down group. They played Sweet Jane, Candy Says (featuring Antony), and Rock Minuet (from the Ecstacy album).
Two more shows will take place - tonight and tomorrow night for a total of four. They will also take the show to Australia in January for the Sydney Festival, the 18-20.
