London event: Xerox – A Celebration Of Fanzine Culture From The 70s To Now

From those clever folks over at Caught By The River comes news of this cool fanzine event taking place in London at Rough Trade Records on Oct. 12:

Xerox – A Celebration Of Fanzine Culture From The 70s To Now
Rough Trade East
Weds Oct 12th 2011
6.30 til 8pm
Free Entry

Time and again, we’ve found ourselves saying that Caught By The River is like a fanzine. As longtime fanzine readers, writers and buyers, it makes total sense that there would be something lo-fi and DIY deep inside us; an ever present and excitable urgency to pass on newly learnt information to as many people as possible.

Earlier this year, we decided to join the dots between our site and some of the grassroots mags that had been inspirational to us by holding Tales From The Typographic Ocean, a symposium at Port Eliot Festival to discuss the roots of the UK’s underground press. Our very good friend Emma Warren (formerly of Jockey Slut) hosted a panel that featured Rough Trade’s Geoff Travis, Elektra record’s biographer Mick Houghton and ZigZag man Andy Childs. Tripping back to the late 60s, the talk moved onto punk rock and beyond, painting a kaleidoscopic picture of a time before today’s heavily sponsored, focus grouped music press.

Back in the Smoke, we thought it was something worth revisiting. On Weds October 12th, we’re staging a second fanzine panel. We’re calling it Xerox. This time it’ll go beyond punk, taking in C86 acid house and a whole bunch more. The line up on the night will feature Caught By The River contributors Andy Childs (ZigZag), Andrew Weatherall (Boy’s Own), Bob Stanley (Saint Etienne) and Geoff Travis (Rough Trade), all in conversation again with Emma Warren.

It’s free. It’ll also be the launch of our own Caught By The River fanzine. More of that later though…

From the Fillmore to the (S)Limelight

Thanks to Signed DC over at It's All The Streets for pointing the way to this cool article reminiscing about the days of yore at the Fillmore East:

"As I prepare for the Fillmore East’s fortieth reunion on Saturday night, I wish I could remember more about all the music that played there. From opening night on March 8, 1968 to the final concert on June 27, 1971, the best-known performers of the era (The Doors, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, The Allman Brothers) were on the stage twice each Friday and Saturday night, at 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Only the Rolling Stones and the Beatles bypassed the legendary theater on Second Avenue and Sixth Street for stadium-sized audiences." Continued here.

Once you're finished with that, check out the shoulder shrug of a review for a new documentary entitled Limelight (trailer below) which focuses on Peter Gatien's run as a club kingpin in the NYC of the 1990's.

"Many students moving into NYU’s Palladium dorm this week likely had no clue that their new East 14th Street address was, until 1998, home to a notorious nightclub of the same name. Now a documentary by Billy Corben, director of “Cocaine Cowboys” (a cult-hit chronicle of the Miami drug scene in the 1980s) revisits the era when the club was a fixture of New York City nightlife, and when its owner, Peter “King of Nightlife” Gatien, was at the heart of two dramatic court cases that represented a larger fight between the hedonism of the late eighties and the Giuliani-induced law and order of the mid-nineties." La Resistance debut NYC shows

Seems to me there are more so called post punk revivalists running around these days than you can shake a stick at. Few of them, however, seem to contain that magical ingredient that makes them believable, or anything other than pretenders. Birmingham, AL, natives, La Resistance, do not fall into this category thankfully. Their influences are obviously well beyond the usual 1978-1980 focused time frame that most students of the new wave seem to focus on, and their music carries a momentum that will hopefully push them beyond & above the crowd.

La Resistance will be making their debut NYC appearances over the next two weeks at Arlene's Grocery on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 at 10:00PM both nights. I hope to see you there.

New book alert: The Cover Art of Studio One Records

Here's yet another item I've been meaning to highlight, but have been procrastinating on - an upcoming book from Soul Jazz, The Cover Art of Studio One Records.

From the review in the Guardian: "More than most labels, Studio One proves that the saddest aspect of the switch to digital formats is the loss of the 12-inch sleeve. In an era where we take "good" (ie tasteful, slightly boring) design as a basic norm, achievable by anybody with a computer, this book is a vital window into a period when design – like music itself – was a hands-on process."

Thunder Soul: Story of the Kashmere Stage Band

Boy, the hits just keep on coming. There's so much good stuff coming out, its hard to keep up. Here's a great looking movie about an obscure 70's high school band that played funk - record collectors have been digging them for a few years now thanks to the folks at Now Again Records. It looks like Thunder Soul has some muscle behind it - you can read a review in the NY Times here, and, starting this weekend, find it playing a theater near you below & here:

Friday Ephemera - OMD setlist

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark played two nights this week at Irving Plaza. I caught the second night, and they were excellent. Try to catch them on their current tour if you can. See more photos and read a terrific review over at Brooklyn Vegan: "Once upon a time, OMD sounded as fearlessly futuristic as anything in pop music, and they were certain that their magical machines would render guitars obsolete. Now, well into middle age (and in the midst of an American tour that hits New York [last night and the night before]), they sound like a glorious old vision of a future that never arrived." Continued here.

Current 2011 tour dates:
September 24 Chicago, IL Vic Theatre

See it now: The Other F Word

I was lucky enough to catch an early screening of an excellent new documentary called The Other F Word last night as part of the Woodstock Film Festival. Based mostly around Pennywise singer, Jim Lindberg, it also includes appearances by Tony Adolescent, Art Alexakis, Joe Escalante, Josh Freese, Fat Mike, Flea, Lars Frederiksen, Jack Grisham, Brett Gurewitz, Tony Hawk, Tim McIlrath, Mark Mothersbaugh, Duane Peters, Ron Reyes, and a few others.

It attempts (and succeeds wildly) in describing the challenges in starting out an anti-authoritarian punk rock musician, and turning into a middle aged parent, and still playing punk rock. In turns it's touching, thought provoking, inspirational, and very funny. I wholeheartedly suggest looking for a screening near you, and keeping an eye out for it when it's released on DVD. This will be up there with Dogtown & Z-Boys when it comes to great films originating from the California counter-cultural scene.

Here are a couple of clips to whet your appetite:

Daisy pines for PE and the Pop Group - coming up at ATP

There are a few reasons to jump in the car and jet to the Jersey Shore next week:

Number one is The Pop Group are going to play their first US gig this century. I guarantee you will never see a band like them. They were hot and funky in Punk Rock London last century, and haven't lost any of their edge or groove. I saw them this time last year at a tiny club called The Garage in Highbury, Islington (London), and don't regret the plane fare one bit. I went to both shows and both were magic. I understand they have been in the studio together since 9/12/2010. My hope was for a Pop Group-Christmas present but it hasn't happened - I believe that's a YET.

Pop Group vocalist Mark Stewart has been working on a collaboration record and has some mind-opening sounds in a recording facility near me. Hopefully that will be in the merch tent. Fingers crossed.

Their drummer is Bruce Smith - fresh from Public Image Limited's recent outings to spots around the world including a recent visit to Japan. He'll give your skeleton a dance lesson.

The second reason to get a ticket for OCTOBER 2 is that PUBLIC ENEMY are going to play the whole of their BRILLIANT album Fear of A Black Planet.

There's a brilliant download available on this link - and it's also where you can get your All Tomorrows parties tickets.

See you in the front row.
