My interview with Godlis on the Vinyl District

I recently did a short interview with Godlis for The Vinyl District in light of his successful Kickstarter campaign. Please have a look...

"I’ve known David Godlis’ photographs longer than I’ve known him. If you’ve read any number of books or New York Times articles about CBGB and related subjects, chances are you know his work as well. I finally befriended him 6 or 7 years ago during one of my frequent periods of unemployment. He needed some help scanning proofsheets, and I was able and willing. Listening to a mix of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and Howard Stern broadcasts, we got to know each other pretty well." Continued here.

The One LP Project by William Ellis at the Archive of Contemporary Music

Jack Bruce with his copy of Olivier Messiaen’s L’Ascension by William Ellis

The ARChive of Contemporary Music is pleased to present its first gallery exhibition by British photographer William Ellis. The exhibition offers 50 portraits of musicians holding one of their favorite albums, and will take place Friday Sept 19 – Friday Oct 3.

Each portrait is accompanied by a short interview that explores the album’s meaning and value for the subject, often offering a profound insight into influences and deep connections with the music of other artists. In some instances the record chosen sets the course of the musician’s life. Unique to this exhibit will be QR codes linking selected portraits to these interviews and audio.

As you frolic over the Labor Day Holiday please mark you calendars, the free gallery exhibition open to the general public Friday Sept 19 – Friday Oct 3. Daily 11am – 5pm. Closed Sundays. ARC members and invited guests (do contact us if you’d like to attend) can attend the opening night viewing and party Thursday evening, Sept 18, from 5 – 9pm.

Special event: At the opening night party Mr. Ellis will take portraits of six lucky guests holding their favorite LP that they can choose from the ARChive’s collection. These portraits will be $100, the fee generously donated by Mr. Ellis to benefit the ARChive. Movie of the Week: The Quietus Talks to Sleaford Mods

Louis Pattison of the Quietus meets Sleaford Mods' Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn in Nottingham at The Chameleon Cafe Bar for a chat.

"Why have Sleaford Mods suddenly caught the public attention? Perhaps it's something to do with the climate – Cameron, zero-hour contracts, indie rock as heritage industry or middle class career path. Or perhaps it's that with Austerity Dogs and this year's Divide And Exit they've really found their sound – a baleful and hilarious rant that reminds you of the Sex Pistols, Wu-Tang Clan, Conflict, Ian Dury and Happy Mondays without actually sounding like any of them." Stupefied: The Holly George-Warren Playlist

We have a special treat today in the form of a new Stupefied playlist from one of my favorite writers, Holly George-Warren. As you hopefully know by now, her latest book, A Man Called Destruction, gives the bio treatment to Alex Chilton - songwriter extraordinaire, rock star at 16 with the Box Tops, and leading light of Big Star. And of course, I'd be remiss not to mention that the cover photo is by none other than our pal, Godlis.

Already at work on her next book (a Janis Joplin bio), all things Holly can be tracked at HollyGeorgeWarren.com including some appearances this weekend in Carrboro, NC, and next month in Nashville, TN, and Brooklyn, NY. The paperback edition of AMCD will be available in 2015.

3 Nights of Spectacle and Extravagance: Dubbed In Glamour (1980)

This poster from a performance at the Kitchen resurrects memories of the incredible cast of women that made downtown New York the most sensational place to be in 1980. Curated by art writer Edit DeAk this spectacle of glamorous, creative gals from Clubland included Tina L’Hotsky, Anya Phillips, Pattie Astor, Cookie Muller, Debbie Harry, Bush Tetras, Vivienne Dick and more. Perhaps most memorable was the performance by Sha-Rock of the Funky Four Plus One, an early instance when Hip-hop crossed over to the downtown art world.

Kickstarter Project of Note: The Godlis Punk Photo Book

I am very excited to help promote the launch of this Kickstarter campaign as I've known about it his plans for it for a few years now. Readers of Stupefaction will know his name, and if you don't, shame on you. David Godlis, better known by his professional name, Godlis, will be self-publishing a high quality compendium of his timeless photos of the scene in & around CBGB between the years 1976-1979. An intro/forward will be written by Jim Jarmusch, and most likely the photos here on this page will be included. This is a MUST.

If you like punk rock, old (at this point) NYC, music history, and fantastic photography with a definite point-of-view, please consider supporting this project. Watch the trailer below, and be sure to visit the Kickstarter page. And of course, you can always visit the Godlis website!

The Pop Group is back!

Its pretty surprising to be typing these words in 2014, but then again, maybe it isn't? The Pop Group, who have played a few reunion gigs over the last couple of years, seems to really be back...lets hope they don't frighten the kiddies. Not only is there a new video (see below), but there is a reissue of the incredible We Are Time (originally released in 1980), and a new collection of rarities entitled Cabinet of Curiosities

Here's the scoop:

We Are Time, named after one of their most infamous onslaughts and originally released on vinyl in 1980, has been remastered from original tapes and is one of two albums being released on October 21st spearheading the reissue program. Of the early live and studio recordings that comprise We Are Time, frontman Mark Stewart says “The Pop Group was mutating so fast right from the start that it was crucial to document those first experiments with this compilation. We Are Time is really ‘the’ teenage Pop Group album. It’s full of defiance and the material demonstrates the band's staunch independence and our really early DIY ethic before the studio became another instrument.”

Guitarist Gareth Sager explains that the band was “trying in an inexplicably naive manner to combine Patti Smith’s Rimbaud ramblings, James Brown, the Stooges, Roxy Music, T. Rex and classical aleatoric music. You can hear the results of this on tracks ‘Genius Or Lunatic,’ ‘Colour Blind,’ ‘Trap,’ ‘Sense Of Purpose,’ ‘Kiss The Book’ and ‘We Are Time.” He goes on to say “soon after this the band were bringing in other influences, Ornette Coleman, King Tubby, Funkadelic, Debussy, Jacques Brel, Fela Kuti, Steve Reich and then you get ‘Thief Of Fire.’”

Also being released in October, Cabinet Of Curiosities is a brand new, nine-track compilation which kicks off with the fractured future-funk single “Where There’s A Will,” originally released as a double A-side shared with The Slits in 1980, and described by Sager as “The group’s best attempt to mix a message with a groove plus some real free playing. If you are really unhinged you may be able to dance to this.” Next up is the unheard, original Andy Mackay (Roxy Music) produced version of “She Is Beyond Good And Evil,” probably the band’s most infamous song (covered by St Vincent on the Jimmy Fallon show and throughout her Strange Mercy tour).

Cabinet Of Curiosities continues with BBC John Peel session tracks “We Are Time” and “Words Disobey Me,” and rounds up previously unreleased songs, “Abstract Heart” and “Karen’s Car,” and other alternative versions. Of “Karen’s Car,” recorded in Finland, Sager recalls “appropriately our final stand with just Stewart, Sager, Smith and Waddington left. This is the sound of paranoia, groove and noise at its height. There was nowhere left to go”. Mark Stewart describes Cabinet Of Curiosities as being of similar status to a lost Pop Group album.

Their original missives, which Mark Stewart describes as “an index of possibilities”, still explode with an incandescent spirit and energy, which has influenced numerous musicians throughout the years.

"Colour Blind" (in the video below) is a very early recording of The Pop Group from We Are Time which will be available for pre-order from 18th August on iTunes. "Colour Blind" will be delivered immediately as an instant gratification track from the same date. Visit iTunes for the pre-order: http://smarturl.it/WeAreTime-iTunes.

“It’s one of those moments when the cogs of your mind shift and your life is going to irreversibly change forever” - Nick Cave on hearing The Pop Group for the first time.

“Without The Pop Group I don’t know what The Minutemen would have sounded like” - Mike Watt

Both albums will be available on all formats individually and also packaged together as a limited CD box set accompanied by memorabilia and an extensive 36pp booklet.A UK tour is planned to accompany the first wave of reissues.

impLOG's Holland Tunnel Dive EP to be reissued

A couple of tracks that pop up on post punk comps from time to time, "Holland Tunnel Dive" and "On B'way" by Don Christensen's post-Contortions project are definitely worthy of owning on vinyl. And now you won't have to shell out $30-$40 for an original pressing if you don't care about that sort of thing. The Dark Entries label out of San Francisco is reissuing the 12" EP on Sept. 17. Here's what they have to say:

impLOG was the solo project of Don Christensen after leaving New York No Wave group The Contortions in 1979. He began making music using found sounds, a Univox drum machine, guitar stomp boxes, Casio keyboards and percussion instruments. Eventually Don gave a demo tape to Charles Ball at Lust/Unlust Records, who loved it, and released the “Holland Tunnel Dive” b/w “On B’way” 12” in 1980. “Holland Tunnel Dive” is a monotone lament, with a narrator reciting a list of all that is missing in his life along to a sparse, mechanical beat. A variable speed Milwaukee drill creeps its way into the song, eventually reaching cacophonous levels. After four minutes of industrial motorik, an upbeat saxophone riff breaks out unexpectedly, unsettling the listener even further. On the B-side is a deranged version of the Lieber and Stoller show tune “On Broadway”, featuring lead guitar by Jody Harris of the Contortions. The record perfectly captures the dark and seedy vibe of downtown New York in the early 80′s.

All songs have been remastered from the original master tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is an exact replica of the original. On the front cover is an illustration of a hydraulic pump against a taxi-cab yellow background. Each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, never before seen photos and liner notes by Don Christensen.

It can be pre-ordered here.

Gallery 98 has added a new section devoted to nightclub invitations and posters from the 1980s, a period in which nightlife and clubs were central as both an inspiration and venue for ambitious new art. Amongst the clubs featured: Area, CBGB, Club 57, Danceteria, Limelight, Mudd Club, Palladium, Paradise Garage, Pyramid, Studio 54, and Tunnel. Nightclub stars include: performers Ann Magnuson, John Sex, Joey Arias, Phoebe Legere; artists Colette, Keith Haring, Richard Kerns; and impresarios Baird Jones, Neke Carson, Michael Alig. Event of Note: Strange and Beautiful - A Celebration of the Music of John Lurie

John Lurie by Tony Nelson.

The NY Times reports: "Le Poisson Rouge is presenting a tribute to the arts world polymath John Lurie that will include four concerts of his music and two exhibitions of his visual art works. The films Mr. Lurie has appeared in (“Stranger Than Paradise,” “Desperately Seeking Susan” and “Sleepwalk,” among them) are not part of the tribute, but some of Mr. Lurie’s film music will figure into the concert programs.

The festival, “Strange & Beautiful: The Music and Art of John Lurie,” opens on Sept. 9, with the Ensemble LPR performing string quartet versions of Mr. Lurie’s music. Among the arrangers are musicians who were members of the Lounge Lizards, the experimental jazz band that Mr. Lurie and his brother Evan founded in 1978. The first of the two art exhibitions opens in Le Poisson Rouge’s gallery the same night, and runs through Nov. 30. The other show runs at the Cavin-Morris Gallery, Sept. 18 to Oct. 25.

The other concerts in the festival include Sex Mob’s program of Mr. Lurie’s film music and an overview of Mr. Lurie’s works by Greg Saunier’s Inner Greatness (Sept. 16); and a concert by Antibalas and Hellbent, focusing on Mr. Lurie’s music with the Lounge Lizards (Sept. 25).

Steven Bernstein, the trumpeter in the Lounge Lizards, is playing in several concerts in the series. Other member of the group, including the guitarist Marc Ribot, the drummers Calvin Weston and Billy Martin, the bassist Tony Garnier and the saxophonist Michael Blake, will be part of a huge roster of players on the closing program at Town Hall on Sept. 27. The program is devoted to music of the Lounge Lizards and the fictitious Marvin Pontiac, an African-Jewish musician that Mr. Lurie created for the 1999 album, “The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits.”
