Sugar Hiccup

This was originally written for my blog on mySpace: .

Another new song in the autumnal style. This one from the Cocteau Twins. Sugar Hiccup has always been one of my favorite songs by them, and it always reminds me of the fall of 1984 when I first heard it courtesy of a mysterious young lady who called herself Ian.

She was a HUGE Birthday Party fan, and liked to tell the story about going to see them at Danceteria in a wedding dress just for Nick Cave. Anyway, we met because I was working at the downtown Tower Records at the time. She was in there one night, and noticed my Cramps skateboard (the coolest skateboard ever...I still have it). I guess she thought it was cool too & we started talking...We hung out a few times spending a few long speed-fueled nights together, never slept together or anything, and as quickly as she came into my life, she was gone. Never to be heard from again. I often wonder what became of her.

Anyway, I said all that to say - the one thing that really stuck with me from her was this Cocteau Twins song. I'll always remember her for that. Cheers Ian...wherever you are!

The Cocteau Twins were a big favorite of the Danceteria crowd and played the club probably a couple of times. In fact, chances are their debut US performances were at the club.

Sugar hiccup

Sugar hiccup, hiccup, Sugar hiccup
Makes the earth tough and tumble
Sugar hiccup, Heavens curtsey and bow
Sugar hiccup, Makes a pig soar and swoon
Sugar hiccup, Sugar hiccup or (while) she reels
Sugar hiccup, Sugar hiccup or she reels
Sugar hiccup
Sugar hiccup, hiccup
Sugar hiccup, Makes the earth tough and tumble
Sugar hiccup
Sugar hiccup or she reels
Sugar hiccup (4x)
Heavens curtsey and bow, Sugar hiccup
Makes a pig soar and swoon, Sugar hiccup
Heavens curtsey and bow
Makes a pig soar and swoon now
Sugar hiccup or she reels
Sugar hiccup, hiccup now
Sugar hiccup, hiccup
Makes the earth tough and tumble
