The Pack

I don't know if there are any Theatre of Hate/Spear of Destiny/Kirk Brandon fans out there, but I just discovered this video of Kirk's pre-TOH band, the Pack, on YouTube. This is amazing and extremely rare. It looks great too in it's low budget black & white glory with Kirk not yet bleaching his hair. This must date from 1979 or so.

Ike Yard!

Coming soon from our friends at Acute Records, a reissue of pioneering early-80's electronic music from the NYC-based Ike Yard. Here's the dope:

Ike Yard “1980-82 Collected” (Acute Records)

Influenced by their punk upbringing, avant-garde schooling, and no wave surroundings in early 80s NYC, Ike Yard managed to create a new sound by also tapping into equal parts the krautrock experimentation of Can, the Neue Deutsche Welle of DAF and the UK post-punk dub of PiL and Joy Division. This combination helped them to create sounds and songs unique enough to catch the attention of Factory Records, who made them their first American signing.

What really set Ike Yard apart were their cutting edge techniques. The mixing board and effects processors were as important as the bass, synth or occasional guitar, giving Ike Yard an aggressive and propulsive sound, where drum machines beat against the sound of scrap metal and angular guitar slashes darted through arpeggiated synth patterns. Acute Records release of "1980-82-Collected" collects, for the first time, Ike Yard's two releases (their Factory LP and an EP for Les Disques du Crepuscule) plus several previously unreleased tracks.

- Featuring an extensive 28 page booklet with exclusive photos, flyers and essays by band members.
- Available for the first time since their original early 80s release.
- Bandmembers would go on to refine their sound in such seminal dance and hip hop projects as Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight and Death Comet Crew.

Tracklisting: 1. Night After Night 2. Sense of Male 3. Infra-Ton 4. The Whistler 5. Cherish 6. Motiv 7. M. Kurtz 8. Loss 9. NCR 10. Kino 11. Cherish 8 12. Half a God 13. Nocturne 14. 20 15. War=Strong 16. We Are One 17. Dancing And Slaving 18. Wolfen

Suicide "Dream Baby Dream"

D'oh!

Perhaps the most articulate article I've read that voices my feelings on our president. Politics aside, this guy is just absolutely clueless.

By William Rivers Pitt, read it here.

Back in the frying pan...

...called New York City after a serene week in the Seaview section of Fire Island, NY. It's too freaking hot and I've been liking this town (or at least Manhattan) less and less for what seems like months now. And now the heatwave...BLECH! Coming back to reality this weekend is a bit of a bummer and I'm not really feeling up to writing much but felt the need to check in and get back to something of a routine.

Besides the bad news called US and International politics, the final pieces of CBGB closing are falling into place. And to top it all off Hilly Kristal was recently diagnosed with lung cancer! Fuckin' hell...

Has anyone seen this documentary on Factory Records history called Shadowplayers? Let me know if it's any good please before I order a copy.

RIP Sid Barrett, 1946-2006.

And lastly one bit of good news, something to look forward to - I managed to get a pair of tickets for one of Tom Waits upcoming shows. There aren't many artists I'll travel to see but ol' Tom is one of them. He plays sporadically at best, and who the hell knows when he may choose to leave us? August 5, Ryman Auditorium, Nashville TN, here I come!

That's What I Call A&R!

I've mentioned before 2 songs I'd like to hear Tom Waits perform (in my dreams).

Well...not only would I like to hear him perform them, but I'd like them to be recorded and produced by Lee Scratch Perry. Jesus, that would be heavy...and that's what I call A&R!

Celebrity Sighting No.4

Checking out of the beautiful Pig Hill Inn this weekend in quaint Cold Spring, NY, who was also checking out? Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.

They looked great. Lou is pretty much all gray now and it suits him. I opened a door for him and he looked me right in the eye and said, "Zoom!" It's a long story that's not worth repeating but it made sense to both of us at the time.
