Here's a couple of interesting takes on last nights opening of the John Varvatos store in the former CBGB space.
At the WFMU blog.
And at Jeremiah's Vanishing New York.
All of this hoo-ha just reminds me - with the current state of the music business & record stores - everyone wants a piece of music's cool, it's credibility. Besides the obvious use of music in soundtracks & commercials, its something car rental companies give away with rentals (free MP3's anyone?), hotels give away as part of their "experience" (curated playlists et al), and clothing labels use to sell an image. I had never heard of John Varvatos until he started paying musicians to appear in his print ads. "Pay" being the operative word there.
So music is basically just another marketing tool now while the industry is dying, at least the way we knew the industry. And many record stores are closing their doors.
But it's not too late! Don't forget - tomorrow, April 19, is Record Store Day! Visit a record store. Buy something. New or used. Get to know someone who works there. Have a real conversation with a real person about music.
