If the news about the Soul Train DVD's excites you, you might also be interested in a new-ish documentary called Soul Power. From the makers of When We Were Kings, Soul Power documents the concert that happened around the fight in Zaire that year between Muhammad Ali & George Foreman. The so called "Rumble In the Jungle."
"A partial list, in alphabetical order, of the reasons to see “Soul Power” might go as follows: James Brown, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, B. B. King, Miriam Makeba, the Spinners and Bill Withers. A partial list, as I say, of performers captured with remarkable sonic brilliance and visual immediacy on an outdoor stage in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Congo), in 1974." Continued here.
Astonishingly enough, the people who are doing the film don't mention two incredibly popular Congolese bands, Franco and TP OK Jazz and Afrisa, who each get a song in the film.
