Charlie Gillett -
RIP.
I highly recommend checking out Charlie's 1970 book,
The Sound Of The City: The Rise Of Rock And Roll, which according to Wikipedia, was originally written as his masters thesis at Columbia University! It's an excellent book recounting the history of rock 'n roll up to that point. Visit his website

Sound of the City is okay, but Charlie's real legacy is the world music compilation CDs he put together over the past few years for a label I can't tell you because I'm not home. Immaculately curated and sequenced, they're great party music. I had no idea he was so old and so sick for so long. Always wanted to meet him, and we started a chat on Facebook one day, but he disappeared after I answered.
I had no idea about his condition either. Regarding the book, it wasn't the most exciting or sexiest book I ever read but there was something in the way he told the story. Plus he managed to include so much in a relatively compact space. I found it really amazing.
As for the world music, I must admit I've never heard his comps, but I'm sure they're beyond reproach. Guys like him are rare.
thanks for posting -- did you know he met his wife on a camping trip in Wales. He was 16 and she was 15.
He managed Ian Dury with his DENTIST.
the guardian has a good obit.
