No...it's not a "New York State of Mind" or "Empire State of Mind." It's the soul punk of Frankie Stubbs and Leatherface. I'm not quite sure who or what the specific target of the lyrics is, but I certainly "don't know what I've been fighting for." From their second album, 1990's Fill Your Boots, here's "New York State" - listen here or below:
I don't know what you're talking about
I look, but I can't see
It never ceases to amaze
That this what you want to be
In New York State, they dance and date
There's killing and there's rape
In Washington, D.C.
There's music and conspiracy
Take a look around,
What do you see?
Things are much the same
As they've always been
And I don't know what I've been fighting for
Just give me more
And I don't know what I've been fighting for
Nothing happens anymore
And I don't know what I've been fighting for
Just give me more
And I don't wanna be anything like that
He's an American dream
Independent July seventeen-something
He won't walk away from that
He's your hero, skateboards and Bermuda shorts
He won't walk away
Won't drink, won't smoke
He's in control
And in New York State, there's killing and there's rape
And you want all of this?!
I don't know what you're talking about
I look but I can't see
It never ceases to amaze
That this is what you want to be
And I don't know what I've been fighting for
Just give me more
And I don't know what I've been fighting for
Nothing happens anymore
And I don't know what I've been fighting for
Just give me more
And I don't wanna be anything like that
