Friday Ephemera Special Edition - Billboard party tonight!
If you have a little time to kill this may interest you. This little discovery was so good I couldn't wait intil Friday to post it. Sometime within the last 12 years or so, I started buying (mostly) full page ads that had been carefully pulled out of old issues of Billboard magazine from the 60's & 70's. Ads for records by James Brown, the Who, Question Mark & the Mysterians, Booker T & the MG's, the Impressions, Major Lance, and a few others. I thought they were beautiful from a design perspective, as well as the fact that they were neat little, limited edition, keepsakes for classic records. I also loved the fact that most of them were designed for a trade magazine that was fairly limited in readership, and would only appear, in many cases, for a week or two. I thought they were a steal at $10 a piece.
Anyway, someone else has seen the beauty as well. Check out this tumblr site I recently discovered: Billboarding Party. I don't know about you, but these ads are a constant surprise...some of the artists I've never heard of. Many of them have been painted in history as being ignored or not supported by their record labels. I also love that there isn't any discrimination regarding genre. I'm really looking forward to see what else Billboarding Party has in store for us. All of the images here were grabbed from BP. Click on them for a closer look and be sure to visit their page. If I only had a gallery...at least I'm not alone!
