Stooges - All Tomorrow's Parties review, Sept 3

Thanks to my pal and FOB© Kenny A. for sending in this succinct review of the Stooges recent show at the New York edition of All Tomorrow's Parties, Friday Sept. 3. Take it away Ken:

The Stooges were greeted with a hero's welcome when they hit the stage at the ATP festival on Friday, September 3. Iggy exclaimed "We are the Fucking Stooges!" and the band was off and running. Opening up with "Raw Power", "Search & Destroy" and "Gimme Danger" they played the entire "Raw Power" album. Iggy was in rare form stage diving, inciting the crowd, mic throwing, singing in his deep baritone & moving about the stage with the passion of a young & hungry 20-year old. He still has such a strong voice after all these years. My son asked me "who invented stage diving?" and I said "you're looking at him, the Ig!"

The band was tight and electric, pounding out the songs in all their sonic glory. Mike Watt got so excited he humped his amp! He really looked happy about playing with his mentors. James Williamson was great, playing with force and an assured confidence of a man comfortable in his years. He was having a blast too. No disrespect to Ron Asheton, but I never heard Iggy or the Stooges do a better version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog". They also preformed a standout version of "No Fun" to close the show. In between they played "I Got A Right", "1970", "Fun House", "Open Up & Bleed", "Beyond the Law" and an instrumental called "Night Theme". Steve Mackay played mostly rhythm sax, complimenting the guitar parts, giving the sound a thick and beefy texture. He didn't play sax on every song, often adding percussion at times. Scott Asheton plowed through the songs. He was steady and tight, keeping it all together.

These guys have paid their dues and it put a smile on my face to see them deliver the goods as the crowd ate up every minute. After they finished the show Iggy and the band came out to give thank yous and high fives. Iggy entered the crowd which raised him onto their hands and passed him around for a few minutes. He rode a wave of people, on his back, looking very Christ-like with his arms stretched out to the sides, basking in the adulation. STOOGES equate GOD!!

Ever wonder what "I Wanna Be Your Dog" sounds like backwards? Wonder no more (thanks Barman):
