This week's edition of the Stupefied playlist comes courtesy of Patti Astor. Astor, after spending some time in the cultural underground of NYC in the seventies, opened what could arguably be considered ground zero of the East Village/downtown art movement of the early 80's. From 1981 thru 1985 she ran the Fun Gallery which featured graffiti artists (practically scandalous at the time), and helped nudge hip hop culture towards the monolithic force it has become. Featuring folks like Futura 2000, Fab Five Freddy, Lee Quinones, Kenny Scharf, and quite a few others, the Fun Gallery went on to achieve legendary and very influential status.
Astor later moved to Los Angeles where she continues to live, and last year she published The Fun Gallery...The True Story. For the first time the story can be had straight from the gallerist instead of out-of-print and now expensive books like Art After Midnight: The East Village Scene. Its highly recommended!
Thanks for the list Patti!
