Back in 1986, the NME released what was perhaps its final great compilation giveaway while at the same time doing something the UK music press was particularly good at back then - creating a music scene out of nothing. With the release of C86 (pictured above), the jingle jangle indie scene was given a marketing aesthetic to hang its hat on, and a bunch of great singles, many mediocre, and some just down right bad, were released. In short, C86 became an era-defining collection, and has remained a favorite for anyone who has heard it over the years.
This June, Cherry Red Records (who else?) will be releasing a three-disc set (pictured left) expanding on the original 22 track tape. The new version will top out at a whopping 72 tracks, including some that are previously unreleased. This is very much in tune with what the label did with last year's Scared To Get Happy: The Story of Indie Pop 1980-1989.
And, like last year, there will be a ten-band-strong Indie festival at London’s Club 229. This time, the event is on Saturday June 14th, headlined by The Wedding Present and also boasting A Witness, The Wolfhounds, The Membranes (with John Robb), Yeah Yeah Noh, Design (ex-Chesterf!elds), David Westlake (The Servants), The McTells, The Band Of Holy Joy and The Claim.
