THE NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME: N.Y.C. Nightclub Ephemera, 1980s
Gallery 98 has added a new section devoted to nightclub invitations and posters from the 1980s, a period in which nightlife and clubs were central as both an inspiration and venue for ambitious new art. Amongst the clubs featured: Area, CBGB, Club 57, Danceteria, Limelight, Mudd Club, Palladium, Paradise Garage, Pyramid, Studio 54, and Tunnel. Nightclub stars include: performers Ann Magnuson, John Sex, Joey Arias, Phoebe Legere; artists Colette, Keith Haring, Richard Kerns; and impresarios Baird Jones, Neke Carson, Michael Alig. In an age before the Internet it was all captured in the cards and handbills created by the clubs and performers to publicize the nightly events.
