CREATION ARTIFACT: 'The Dawn of Creation Records 1983-1985' 5CD Boxset coming from Cherry Red in September

A subject near & dear to my heart, Creation Records is finally getting some decent retrospective treatment in the form of what looks to be a very nice 5 CD set from Cherry Red Records. It will be released on Sept, 25 and should be available from wherever it is you prefer to purchase physical music from. Here's the scoop:

"When we started Creation, I was twenty three so we made it up as we went along - most of the first batch were mates I had met through my club the Living Room.”
Alan McGee

Creation Records was one of the most important, vital independent labels of the 80s and 90s, born in the post-punk era and progressing to define the Britpop generation. The label evolved out of a hip London club night and won the plaudits with a string of limited edition 7” singles and a handful of albums – including the acclaimed debut ‘Upside Down’ by The Jesus & Mary Chain. During this period 1983-1985, the label also issued vinyl by Primal Scream (their debut 45), The Pastels, The Bodines, The Loft, The Membranes, The Jasmine Minks et al.

Creation Artifact is the first comprehensive box set devoted to the early years of Creation Records. Housed in a lavish ‘book’ set, Creation Artifact pays tribute to that seminal period with two discs comprising early A’s and B’s, a third CD of rarities and album tracks, another comprising previously unissued demos and a fifth disc of rare BBC sessions. This follows a similarly-packaged 10 x 7” vinyl box set issued for Record Store Day 2015.

At that time, Creation Records felt like a colourful antidote to the grey, doom-laden masses which were littering the Indie charts. In place of monochrome post-punk or morbid goth rock, Creation Records’ output was colourful and sexy, meshing the excitement of punk with the melodic qualities and musical flourishes of 60s freakbeat and psychedelia. And in Alan McGee, Creation had a founder with true musical vision and ambition.

Awash with rare memorabilia, a 12,000-word essay from journalist Neil Taylor, band biographies, personal reminiscences and numerous archive finds, Creation Artifact is the ultimate tribute to the dawn of Creation Records 1983-1985.

Creation Artifact follows the Record Store Day 2015 Creation Records 45 (10×7″) box set - The First 10 Creation Records singles released between 1983 and 1984 presented in a deluxe lift off lid box and replica sleeves with a booklet containing reminiscences from the artists.
