Inspired by Raffaele's recent epic Shoes! posting on her blog, I figured I would share my own somewhat secret fetish for cool footwear.
For years now I've usually had some sort of creeper-esque gear stacked up in my closet. From my first pair of crimson colored (w/black stitching), suede, thick soled Robots in the early 80's, there has always been something about these shoes that speaks to me. The shape is one thing - sensible yet sleek, sexy, and just plain cool. Another reason is the stitching that is usually a different color than the primary color of the shoe itself. I've always been a sucker for little details like this, and I suppose I always will. Even if I don't like the shoes themselves, I'll still look at them.
I guess another reason I've liked them for so long is that they've certainly never caught on in a mainstream Doc Martens way (although I certainly still like the odd pair of Docs). The right pair of creepers has always been cool to wear and makes one stand out a bit in the crowd. Hell...if you take good enough care of them, they can be worn with a suit and/or worn to work. They're just plain sharp.
Anyway, partly inspired by Joe Strummer, it's been a long time "dream" of mine to own a pair of white leather creepers. Once I got the news this week about the George Cox closing, I knew what I had to do...I ran right down to Trash & Vaudeville and bought a pair that I've been admiring from afar for a long time now. I was lucky they had a pair that fit as I knew Trash has had problems in the past in being stocked properly on orders from George Cox. They'll look amazing with one of my custom made gaberdine suits from Savoia.
What do you think?
Don't you think they resemble a Cadillac Eldorado?
Or a Gretsch White Falcon?
