Crawdaddy!: Was there a defining moment for you, either before or after, that you thought, “Hey, photography is where it's at and this is what I'm going to do?”
Gruen: No. My parents always wanted me to get a real job. Photography was not considered a real job. I learned photography from my mom ’cause it was her hobby, but it was considered a hobby. I was supposed to work at some respectful place from nine to five and get a salary. Not ’til I was about 45, and I was putting out some limited edition books, did my mother finally figure out that maybe photography was a career. It certainly wasn't acceptable when I was starting out and it never amounted to much money, so it never really seemed like a career. Continued here.

Ah! Excellent find...I really want to see his studio. Can you imagine?
I've been to his apartment before. Very nice guy. Next year you should come to his birthday party with me. Its always the party of the year - every November.
