Stefan Lutak (Holiday Cocktail Lounge) 1920-2009 RIP
I was saddened to read this morning over at Jeremiah's about the passing of Stefan Lutak, proprietor of the Holiday Cocktail Lounge. My condolences to his family & friends.
For those who wish to pay their respects to Mr. Lutak, there will be a viewing on Sunday at Peter Jarema from 2:00 - 5:00 and from 7:00 - 9:00 (an appropriate choice--the funeral home is a neighborhood survivor since 1906).
I have many memories of the Holiday and it's always been reassuring to see it there on St. Marks Place over the years. I wonder how long it will last?

I have memories in that place dating all the way back to 1982. Being a fellow Ukrainian, I could always "get through" to "Pan Stephan" even when he didn't feel like serving anyone. The benefits of knowing the native tongue.
Btw, that picture of the bar is truly amazing. As a former bartender, I marvel at the simple efficiency of the setup. Another time altogether.......f*ck Cosmo culture......
Nice blog, will check in more often.
Cheers!

I didn't find out until last night, but I knew something was off. For the past few weeks, The Holiday was closed. It wasn't until last night that I noticed a leaflet taped to the Holiday's entrance announcing Steph's passing. I just can't tell you how stunned and sad I am about it. The Holiday is an icon of an era. Now that Steph's gone, so is that era. Without him, the Holiday's just a shell with ghosts. No one could ever take Steph's place. My condolences to his family and Lynn.
