It's not time for
Friday Ephemera, but I had to post this very cool bit of ephemeral rock history (courtesy of the wonderful
Letters of Note). It's a 1997 fax response from Joe Strummer to a documentary film maker discussing his opinion of Bruce Springsteen. The film was a 1998 UK television production called
Bruce Springsteen: A Secret History.
"We need people like this..." Indeed.

a provocative post! I can't say I'm buying Joe's truth here. Nope. I'm not buying it. I was never a big clash fan, even tho i had a lot of friends back then who were and i saw them live a bunch of times (their fans ruined my mohair sweater with their gob). and i can like the bruce springsteen that borrows from Phil Spector. I liked BS's dark nights of the soul on the road songs and when i'm driving and Bruce comes on the radio - yeah - he makes sense but.. i don't know.. And, yeah, i like they way the guys look ... joe strummer... i think this letter tells me more about the qualities joe strummer saw in himself that he lacked. Someone convince me otherwise - please --
Very thoughtful comment Daisy, and a much appreciated different point of view. I sort of feel the same way. Although I was a bigger Clash fan than you.
