Richard Hell presents Ariana Reines this Friday

 

Come and get your mind busted, your body dizzed, and have some laughs with Ariana Reines this Friday. Richard will first interview her onstage, supplemented by multi-media illustration, and then Ariana will read/perform for 45 minutes or an hour. There will be an exclusive Ariana-signed, limited-edition broadside giveaway for all attendees too.

Along with Karen O. and Julian Casablancas, D. is one of the most innately talented NYC rock and roll/pop musician/singer/songwriters to come up in the aughts--he founded and led the Virgins 2007-2013, and will have a new solo album out just about the time of the "Night Out" event.

Friday Night: Richard Hell & Lydia Loveless at Symphony Space

As reported a few days ago, Richard Hell will be beginning a monthly run of events at Symphony Space beginning this week. Here is the scoop on night #1, this Friday, October 17:

 

My “Night Out” with the sublime 23-year old neo-country singer and songwriter Lydia Loveless at the Thalia Theater (for tickets and backstory, including pertinent music video, click here …), where I will interview her onstage for a half hour before she performs with full band for an hour (there will be surprise bonuses too), takes place this FRIDAY, October 17. Lydia is the only current singer/songwriter the power of whose music and voice consistently makes me cry. I was pleased to find an email from Mr. Hell in my inbox - actually it ended up in my spam folder so I'm glad I checked! Anyway, he's going to be hosting a series of events here in NYC beginning October 17 at the Thalia Theater at Symphony Space. Here's what he had to say:

Night Out with Richard Hell

I’m curating and hosting a series of events at Symphony Space for which I’ve dragooned one youngish artist per evening to sit still to be interviewed on stage by me before he or she performs. The interviews will be 25-30 minutes and the performances 45-50 minutes (with the exception of Kelly Reichardt’s 1:40 movie--projected via celluloid, not digitally, incidentally). These will happen in a beautifully equipped venue, seating only 168. There will be bonuses—surprise supplements to the interviews and some ace giveaways. The main thing though is that all these people are interesting and talented and this is a unique chance to see them so intimately exposed…

First off will be LYDIA LOVELESS, Fri 17 Oct, 2014

Lipstick Traces goes to college

Possibly lost amongst all of the crazy goings on recently, or just not as well publicized, is this cool event happening Thursday evening up at Columbia University. The lecture should run about 40 minutes, along with a Q&A, and book signing.

In Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century, Greil Marcus delved into the cross-currents, tangles, and whirlpools that made such vastly different movements as dada, lettrism, the Situationist International, and punk part of a single current. To mark the just-published 20th-anniversary edition of the book, Columbia University presents Greil Marcus in a one-man performance of Lipstick Traces. The event will take place on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Altschul Auditorium, 420 West 118th Street.

In addition, the Music & Arts Library at Columbia University will display books by Marcus, books that influenced him, and posters, records, and other materials courtesy of the ARChive of Contemporary Music. The exhibition will be on display from November 1 to December 15, 2009 at The Gabe M. Wiener Music & Arts Library, 7th floor of Dodge Hall, at 2960 Broadway.

Greil Marcus is the author of Mystery Train (1975/2008), Dead Elvis (1991), The Old, Weird America: The World of Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes (1997), The Dustbin of History (1995), Like a Rolling Stone (2005), The Shape of Things to Come: Prophecy in the American Voice (2006), and other books. With Werner Sollers he is the co-editor of A New Literary History of America, published this fall by Harvard, and the editor of Best Music Writing 2009, published this fall by Da Capo. The first records editor at Rolling Stone, in 1969, in recent years he has taught at Berkeley, Princeton, & Minnesota; this fall he is teaching “Music as Democratic Speech, from the Commonplace Song to Bob Dylan” at the New School.

A book signing will follow the event. Lipstick Traces: Live is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Columbia Libraries, the ARChive of Contemporary Music, and the Arts Initiative at Columbia University.
