Movie of the Week Extra: Happy birthday Lou Reed!

 

In honor of the countercultural giant's 71st birthday, here's a cool documentary (one playlist in seven parts) about the characters in "Walk On The Wild Side."

Live and in color! This is Max's Kansas City video shot by Anton Perich including Andrea Feldman, Jackie Curtis, Candy Darling, Danny Fields, Jason Holiday, Taylor Mead, Mickey Ruskin, and a plethora of others. At 14 minutes & 15 seconds, there isn't any sound until about the 13 minute mark, but it's worth going through for the you-are-there-ness of it. Color photographs from this scene are difficult enough to come by, never mind color film!

This is the edited version of a series of short clips by Perich, and currently being shown at the Steven Kasher Gallery from September 15, 2010-October 9, 2010. See more images from the show here.

- The Candy Darling documentary will be screening in London on March 18.
- Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys) and Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls) have formed a new band called Batusis. They make their debut at SxSW, and that will be followed by the release of an EP.
- Modculture teases us with very neat Two Tone mugs - too bad they're not available for shipping to the US!
- The Spin magazine complete archive is now available for perusing on Google. Hat tip to Cerysmatic Factory for pointing that out.

Remembering Candy

Hat tip to EV Grieve for pointing out this article from the NY Times on New York cultural icon, Candy Darling, and the efforts to preserve her memory.

"She was baptized James Lawrence Slattery in 1944 but reinvented herself as Candy Darling in the late 1960s after leaving suburban Long Island for the streets of the West Village, a place in the back room at Max’s Kansas City and a role as muse.

She hung out with artists like Andy Warhol and crossed paths with musicians like David Bowie. The filmmaker Paul Morrissey put her in two of his movies. Lou Reed wrote the Velvet Underground song “Candy Says” with her in mind and included a verse about her in his “Walk on the Wild Side.” Continued here.
