I'll Be There: New Chic single hits March 20, UK dates, new album in June

Nile Rodgers posted this teaser video recently, and wow...does it sound good! The single, "I'll Be There" (instrumental version shared here) is available March 20 from iTunes & on vinyl here, and a new album is due in June on Warner Brothers. As I understand it, it's a mix of old & new, as Nile has dug up some old tapes, reworked them, added some new stuff, and presto! New Chic! The world could use it.

UK dates are in March (see below), and I HIGHLY suggest catching them if possible. I was lucky enough to see them in NYC a few summers ago, and besides being easily the most diverse audience I've ever been a part of, the show is just pure joy from beginning to end. Nothing but hits and a really good time.

Nile Rodgers - Le Freak autobiography

Chic's Nile Rodgers has an autobiography coming out in mid-October entitled Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny. The NY Times T Magazine has an excerpt today:

"It took me a long time to realize that the things my parents did were not exactly normal. I was about 7 years old, and it was the tail end of the 1950s, when it started to dawn on me that they were . . . well, let’s just say they were different. For instance: my friends and I got shots when we went to the doctor and we hated them. But my parents stabbed themselves with needles almost every day, and seemed to enjoy it. Weird." Good Times: Nile on skates

These images of Nile Rodgers rollerskating in his kitchen during a recent rainy weekend were too great not to point out. Hat tip to Disney Roller Girl.

Nile Rodgers, Kool DJ Herc need support

Two giants of NYC musical history are both in need of some support. Chic's Nile Rodgers (left) is dealing with cancer which he found out he had last October. Since he's a social media maniac, you can keep up with his ordeal by visiting his blog here, and following him on twitter here. The support he needs is most likely of the emotional & spiritual in nature.

DJ Kool Herc (right), on the other hand, also needs that sort of support, but he really needs financial help as he has no health insurance. Because of this, a recent kidney stone issue has turned into a major crisis for the hip hop pioneer. As it says on his site: "Like many artists and many Americans of every race and age, the father of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc, is without health insurance. Because of this fact, a recent medical issue—kidney stones that caused him internal bleeding and serious pain—has become a financial crisis.

Herc will need additional surgery and medical procedures to become well. Yet the health care system has treated him as it has many uninsured patients—using red tape and threats of prohibitive up-front payments to discourage him from seeking and obtaining the treatment he needs.

In order to help Herc deal with his health issues and mounting medical bills, the hip-hop community has come together to create the DJ Kool Herc Fund. We are asking that all who have enjoyed the culture and the movement that Herc created to donate whatever you can to ensure that this pioneer may heal.

He has given so much to make our lives better. Let us do the same for him."
