On the Scene: Arctic Monkeys at Madison Square Garden, 02.08.14

Liz Maher reports: Arctic Monkeys took the stage for a sold out show at Madison Square Garden clearly elated at having sold out tour t-shirts and pom pom hats. They also put on a good, not great show, though I’m sure audience adored them even in the death grip of Buyer’s Remorse at $30 for an acrylic hat which looks all too twee. Hell, I adore them - sooo cute! Remember best-beloveds, as the poet wrote, ‘the world is mud-licious and puddle-wonderful’. Monkeys would have been better, same show, at Alt-Venue-Shift-Delete-MSG which manages to distill almost every concert to the intimacy of a podiatry exam – then sports fans will tell you there is always the danger of falling off the step seat levels if you experience a Deleuzian moment of transcendence – of becoming Monkey. Another gripe is the show only covered 20 songs including encores. Yesterday’s annoying-in-an-amusing-way twits from Sheffield are today’s corporate slugs. (Continued after the jump.)

Domino to reissue Orange Juice LP's on vinyl

Orange Juice, original line up, by David Corio
As reported this morning by Slicing Up Eyeballs, Domino Records will be reissuing all four studio albums by Orange Juice on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 20! This is some of my all time favorite music and has made me happy for years...ask anyone who knows me. Now is your chance to pick up brand new, (hopefully) reasonably priced, copies of these classics...especially their debut, You Can't Hide Your Love Forever. All four will include digital download codes.

You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever (1982)
Rip It Up (1982)
Texas Fever (1984)
The Orange Juice (1984)

On the scene: Dirty Projectors, Port Chester NY, 9.25.12

The DP's latest album, Swing Lo Magellan (Domino Records)

Reviewed by Liz Maher exclusively for Stupefaction - thanks Liz!:

“Poor Chesta,” David Longstreth incredulously pronounced at the opening of The Dirty Projector’s gig at Westchester’s newly refurbished Capitol Theater on 9/25/12. For a moment it flashed through my head that Longstreth was making a heartfelt reference to Linkin’ Park. But no, he was just in a state of sleepy disbelief and sounded as though he had dozed off on the B46 and wound up at the Capitol by accident. He did look a little unwashed, too.

I never thought of the Projectors as a guitar band until this show, but Longstreth’s and the diminutive Amber Coffman’s highly thoughtful arrangements made it clear they are one - with a whole lot of harmonizing thrown in. (Continued after the jump.)
