New Book of Note: Dexy's Midnight Runners - The Team That Dreams In Caffs by Geoff Blythe

DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS: THE TEAM THAT DREAMS IN CAFFS by Geoff Blythe

The Team That Dreams in Caffs is the first book written by a member of Dexys Midnight Runners from the period of their debut album Searching For the Young Soul Rebels.

This book is the story of the making of that album and what it was like being a member of the band and working with the genius Kevin Rowland. Alongside Geoff Blythes and the authors narrative the book includes contributions from a selection of fans and people that were connected with the making of the album and the band at the time.

The Team That Dreams in Caffs also includes photographs from Mike Layes collection. Mike was the bands official photographer between 1979 and 1980 and captured that iconic image that the band displayed of donkey jackets, wooly hats, brogues and carrying northern soul style holdalls. All the photographs are black and white, which adds to the atmosphere of the book.

Searching For The Young Soul Rebels was the album that gave the world such songs as Geno and There There My Dear and put Dexys Midnight Runners on the map. The album is regarded as many as one of the greatest debut albums of all time and this book is an attempt to celebrate that fact.

New documentary alert: Dexys, Nowhere Is Home

Thanks to Paul Gorman for bringing this to my attention. Dexys: Nowhere Is Home is a new film by Kieran Evans & Paul Kelly (Heavenly Films), and centers on Dexys’ 2013 residency at London’s Duke Of York’s Theatre and the group’s One Day I’m Going To Soar album. It will premier in May, and I, for one, will be watching.

Dexys: New single stream and Jools Holland New Years Eve performance on BBC 2

Dexys have announced a new single extracted from the terrific One Day I'm Going To Soar (which made my best of 2012 list) - "She's Got a Wiggle" will be released digitally on Feb 25 via the usual outlets. In the meantime it can be streamed below & on their Soundcloud (sort of making moot the point of a single release, no?).

They've also announced they'll be performing on Monday night along with Jools Holland on his New Years Eve Hootenanny show on BBC 2 at 11:10 GMT.

Incapable of Love: new video from Dexys

Being that I just might be the only music blog within the US to post about Dexys, I feel it my duty to put up their new video for "Incapable of Love," a new single (available Oct. 29 in the UK) from their latest album, One Day I'm Going To Soar. Wonderful!

Dexys: Searching at Hurrah, 1980

Dexys in action at Hurrah, NYC, August 24, 1980 by C. Lucas
Reader Christopher Lucas was kind enough to share the above photo he snapped 32(!) years ago at Hurrah here in New York. The occasion was the debut US concerts of Dexys Midnight Runners. Not only did he shoot some photos at the show, but he and Bill Rich also interviewed the band for their zine, Talk Talk. Check out the interview in full below (click each image for a closer look), as well as a clip of the band live at Hurrah. Thanks Christopher!

Old Ride, new Dexys and Dr. John...

Hard to believe it's been 20 years since this classic album was released. Producer Alan Moulder was/is always a great choice - especially at this time - and Ride were arguably at their peak with this one. Just fantastic. If you don't believe me, turn your speakers up & listen to the opening track, "Leave Them All Behind":

Keep an eye out for some reissue stuff from the likes of Rhino...and read a review here.

In the meantime, check out this track, "Nowhere Is Home," from the upcoming fourth album from Dexys - Kevin Rowland's latest incarnation of the band. The new album, One Day I'm Going To Soar, is out June 4:

Lastly, jump on over to the Quietus, and check out an exclusive stream of a new Dr. John track, "Revolution." It will be on his new album, Locked Down, out April 2, and produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. It also happens to feature my pal, Brian Olive, on guitar. Yes!

New Dexy's in June...Let's hope it soars

As mentioned last month, it seems there will definitely be a new Dexy's album in 2012, June 4th to be specific, and it will be called One Day I'm Going To Soar. The band released a clip on YouTube this week that features the first two minutes of the first track, "Now"...what do you think?

Tired of unemotional insincere music?

Following up to yesterdays good news about a possible Dexys release this year, I thought I'd post this blast (1980 to be exact) from the past that Dave from Fruitier Than Thou posted on his tumblr today. As the caption in the photo said yesterday, Kevin Rowland tells like it is. Give me a band with an agenda!

New Dexy's Midnight Runners for 2012? According to John Robb the answer is yes. And thanks to him & Louder Than War for posting the preview below. How sweet it is to hear that voice on a new recording. Let's hope it happens!
