The Clash and The Damned messing around 1979

Worth it for the uke & spoons arrangement of New Rose with the Strummer vocal. And how about Scabies on the piano? The Damned were much more talented than they ever got credit for. Did any of this end up  on that DVD that came with the London Calling reissue a few years ago? Via DM.

The Damned at CBGB, April 1977

"After strutting around the stage and openly mocking the New York crowd, suddenly, without warning or even a count in, they launched, catapulted, tore, into "I Feel Alright" by The Stooges. It wasn't the beginning of a song, it was Detonation! Their power, energy, and volume was all simply breathtaking. They slammed into the main riff (sort of a sped up version of "Spoonful") with a frantic and almost desperate ferocity. I can vividly remember sensing the whole of CBGB sort of just collectively gasping, 'Holy Shit!'"

Step back in time to April 8, 1977 with Binky Philips as he attends a Damned show at CBGB. Not just any Damned show, this was the debut performance for any UK punk band in the United States. Binky was there for the first of two sets the Damned played that night (bands used to do those sort of things). Read the whole thing here. Photo courtesy of Ebet Roberts.

DJ Sensible, the man who put the bang in gang

Following the great show by the Damned at Irving Plaza last week, the band had a party at the Beauty Bar on 14th Street, and Captain Sensible DJ'd. He's been kind enough to be giving away an MP3 of his set via his blog on Myspace...good stuff! Grab it here - the link is near the bottom of the page.

Some posters - most available #3

I've recently started putting together my lifelong collection of posters with the purpose of trying to sell most of them. I'm open to offers of cash or even a trade if I'm interested in what you have to offer. I don't want to put them on eBay just yet. I've sold posters on eBay before & they can be a pain in the ass. However, if it comes to that, I'll do it eventually.

If you're interested, you can download a close-to-complete list of what I have here. There are no measurements or descriptions, just a list. If you need more information, just ask.

More musical ephemera

An 8x10 publicity shot for Glenn Danzig's shortlived Samhain:

This is interesting - its a large size sticker, maybe 5x7, for some Australian tour dates by Lou Reed. I'm guessing it dates from the late 70s/early 80s:

Cut out of the Village Voice, an ad for a great Damned tour that was a farewell tour at the time, in 1989. It featured the original line up as well as newer member like bassist Paul Gray as they sort of rotated through their entire career up to that point. According to this website - the set included See Her Tonite, Fish, Born To Kill, Fan Club, Help, Neat Neat Neat, I Fall, New Rose, I Feel Alright, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Melody Lee, Love Song, Smash It Up, Daytripper, Looking At You, The Last Time (the Rolling Stones). The Captain stripped off for 'The Last Time'. I also remember him making some funny cracks about how much money they were making.

Cramped and Damned

This is the sort of thing that really gets me going. As posted by our buddy Lindsay, this is a certain UK punk lead singer's letter to join the Legions of the Cramped fanclub back in 1980. Lindsay ran the club, and as he says, this is neat (x3)! That's an understatement!

I also love how his signature looks like one might imagine to look like.
