The High Numbers 1964

Accidentally I stumbled across the following footage of the High Numbers (i.e. the Who) performing "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" and "I Gotta Dance To Keep From Crying," in 1964, at the Railway Hotel in London. I don't know if I'm late to the party on this, or what, but it's incredible, and definitely worthy of being watched over & over again. It's so rare that film of this quality & age are found.

Apparently it's the only remaining footage of what was a film being shot at the time by Chris Stamp, and Kit Lambert, who both went on to manage the band not long after this was done. On the suggestion of friend, early manager and uber mod, Pete Meadon, the Who had changed their name to the High Numbers for a short time to appeal to the mod crowd before reverting to their former name, and becoming who they became - under the direction of Stamp & Lambert. Roger Daltrey certainly gives Lou Reed a run for his money in those wraparound shades, don't you think?

I had never seen it before, and was actually looking for something else with the word 'high' in the title. Just incredible. I'll have to check out Amazing Journey sometime.
