Movie of the Week: Quadrophenia (1979)

Just because I'm finally getting around to reading the Pete Townshend autobiography, Who I Am, which I'm really enjoying, here is Quadrophenia. A great film, but you already knew that, right?

Movie of the Week: Made in England (1966)

According to the poster, this is about 40 minutes of French television from 1966. It includes The Merseys, Georgie Fame (always welcome around here) with some Memphis-style horns, the Who, one very hip French DJ, and some other treats. The Georgie Fame footage looks to be from a similar collection of footage from the Ram Jam Club that we saw back in January when I posted this amazing film of Junior Walker and the All Stars. Otherwise I've had difficulty digging up any info on this. Maybe Bedazzled knows?

In Brief - Items of Interest

Dangerous Minds reminds us of the great BBC doc about Rough Trade Records, "Do It Yourself: The Story of Rough Trade Records." Some of you may remember me posting about this last year.

Dangerous Minds also points the way to "Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Leonard Cohen" - a Canadian film from 1965.

Alan McGee discusses the new album from Dan Treacy and the Television Personalities, and his legacy in light of MGMT's "Tribute To Dan Treacy" on their new album.

Take a poll at the Guardian - Should Iggy start keeping his shirt on?

EV Grieve reports on whats become of the Avenue A storefront that used to house Etherea Records...and it's good news.

The Aquariam Drunkard reminds us about a longtime fave compilation series, Lux & Ivy's Favorites. And while you're over at the WFMU blog, don't forget "Seven Minutes In Deadwood."

Caught By the River remembers Roger Eagle, gone 11 years this week.

The blog over at Rocks Back Pages comes up with a list of 25 songs mentioning the Ramones.

PiL will be filming an upcoming Brooklyn show as part of a new documentary on the band.

And finally, Pampelmoose digs up a couple of very nice videos:

The High Numbers 1964

Accidentally I stumbled across the following footage of the High Numbers (i.e. the Who) performing "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" and "I Gotta Dance To Keep From Crying," in 1964, at the Railway Hotel in London. I don't know if I'm late to the party on this, or what, but it's incredible, and definitely worthy of being watched over & over again. It's so rare that film of this quality & age are found.

Apparently it's the only remaining footage of what was a film being shot at the time by Chris Stamp, and Kit Lambert, who both went on to manage the band not long after this was done. On the suggestion of friend, early manager and uber mod, Pete Meadon, the Who had changed their name to the High Numbers for a short time to appeal to the mod crowd before reverting to their former name, and becoming who they became - under the direction of Stamp & Lambert. Roger Daltrey certainly gives Lou Reed a run for his money in those wraparound shades, don't you think?

I'm the face, baby, is that clear?

Wow! Quite a find here...Rock Explosion in London is offering these wonderful shots of a baby faced Who in action in 1964 at the Railway Hotel. They are available in 16 x 20 prints hand printed from the original negatives. The photographer is not named. Absolutely stunning!
