Lou Reed's 1970 acoustic demos

It was only a matter of time before these recording hit the right site, and were made available legally or otherwise. I was lucky enough to hear them several years ago, and was sworn to secrecy. The person who played them for me told me he had promised his source that he would never copy them, or give them to anyone. Which, as far as I know, he did.

If you consider yourself a big Lou Reed fan, I highly recommend grabbing these demos while they're available. Its history in the making, and a great insight into his working process. To download these, as well as a terrific write up on this period of Lou's career, visit A History of the Underground Record Industry.

A tip o' the hat to the Aquarium Drunkard.

Velvet Underground: 1970 Max’s Kansas City Concert Poster

From the collection of the late Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison, a rare 1970  concert poster advertising the Velvet's last shows with Lou Reed, at Max's Kansas City in New York.  These were the shows at which the band's Live At Max's Kansas City album was recorded.  Measuring 28.75" x 11", this is in very nice condition; a high level paper conservator has flattened three horizontal creases and retouched a few small stains (one small line from what looks like a pink magic marker is visible on the back.) At our request, Sterling Morrison's widow Martha has written in pencil on the back "Martha Morrison: Sterling Morrison Collection."  Our letter of authenticity will note that this was part of Morrison's legendary archive.  A classic image with incredible provenance. Buy it.

Audience at the Fillmore East, 09.23.70
Amalie says, “The very first seats to sell out for any show were the last three rows in the balcony. That’s where the kids were left alone to smoke dope. You could get stoned out of your mind there and the ushers wouldn’t hassle you. The older couple in this picture is the parents of the lead singer of Sha Na Na.” See more fantastic Fillmore-era shots from Amalie over at The Local East Village blog.

And check out this great article they posted recently about the long-gone venue by photographer Frank Mastropolo.

1970 Rollin' In Sight: The Goose Lake International Music Festival, August 7-9, 1970

After recently posting a video of The Stooges performing "1970" at The Goose Lake Festival, I just happened to find this over the weekend - also recently posted on YouTube. Almost two full hours of performance (including the Stooges footage), and amusing commentary by area residents, of the festival itself which took place August 7, 8, and 9, 1970, in Goose Lake, MI. If you've ever read Grit, Noise, and Revolution: The Birth of Detroit Rock 'n' Roll, you'll have an idea about the trouble referred to at the beginning - reportedly there were plenty of drug related arrests following the festival, and there were bad vibes a-plenty. The film itself focuses more on the people in & around the festival than the performers.

Acts who appeared included The  Faces, Jethro Tull, Chicago, Ten Years After, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Mountain, John Sebastian, the James Gang, Bob Seger, the MC5, The Stooges, Detroit (with Mitch Ryder), Brownsville Station, and SRC.

The Stooges: 1970 in 1970...Wow!

Here's something you don't see everyday - synced color footage of the original Stooges in action, performing "1970", from the Funhouse album, circa 1970. According to the uploader, this footage was shot at the Goose Lake International Music Festival, Jackson, MI, and was sourced from the fan-compiled DVD, They Even Tried To Buy My Song - Iggy Pop 1969-1979. Simply amazing!

Movie of the Week: Led Zeppelin - Live at the Royal Albert Hall (1970)

January 9, 1970: Zeppelin Put the Excitement Back Into Pop: It isn’t hard to understand the substantial appeal of Led Zeppelin. Their current two-hour plus act is a blitzkrieg of musically-perfected hard rock that combines heavy dramatics with lashings of sex into a formula that can’t fail to move the senses and limbs. At the pace they’ve been setting on their current seven-town British tour there are few groups who could live with them on stage. (Source)
