Movie of the Week: Pop Gear / Go Go Mania (1965)

Pop Gear (in the US: Go Go Mania) is a British music review film, directed by Frederic Goode which was released in 1965. It contains live concert footage of The Beatles, and lip-synched films of some of the British Invasion bands, including The Animals, Herman's Hermits, The Nashville Teens, Peter and Gordon, Matt Monro, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, The Honeycombs, The Rockin' Berries, and the Spencer Davis Group). The material by The Beatles was lifted from a newsreel short The Beatles Come to Town (1963).

I can't believe I've never seen this entire thing. And like the recently posted Charlie Is My Darling, I'd watch this now as I'd be surprised if its up for very long. Although this has been on YouTube since January, so maybe it'll be available for a while...

Famously recorded on the roof of Apple in London on January 30, 1969, it was to be their last performance as a band in public. The footage was included in the Let It Be documentary released in 1970. Songs included:

Yes, I know the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death was yesterday...I didn't post anything about it, saw this picture this morning, and wanted to run it. What I do remember is 30 years ago this morning being woken up by my mother with the news of his murder. Unlike Alex, I don't remember much more than that, other than being somewhat initially shocked with the news. I wasn't sure what to do (did I need to do anything?), and I had to go to school. As I read somewhere else, music would have been a whole lot different without him. That's the thought for the day about this.

I have to say I'm impressed. I gave the above puzzle of the Beatles' White Album to my mom's boyfriend for xmas. Partially because I thought he would like it, and partly because I thought it was funny...I mean, it's gotta be a bit difficult to do a 500 piece puzzle that's basically all the same color, right? Well, it took him a couple of months, but he's done it. Now he has to do the other side which pictures all four sides of the vinyl. Congrats John!
