Vic Godard's northern soul

One of my favorite bloggers, Kevin, is the man behind the London Nobody Sings, and Anywhere Else But Here Today - a busy boy, indeed, with an insane knowledge of music. His initial project, Your Heart Out, was a free zine he wrote monthly and distributed free on the web, for about a year, before starting the Your Heart Out blog (YHO issues are still available there). Some of you more regular Stupefaction readers may remember my posting about it when new issues were available.

Anyway, the Your Heart Out blog has been somewhat quiet as of late, but yesterday Kev posted something special - a bootleg recording of Vic Godard's Subway Sect opening for Siouxsie & the Banshees in 1980 at the Music Machine in London. By the time they played this show, Vic had all but abandoned the punk/Velvet Underground roots of the original Sect and had adopted a more sophisticated approach - bringing in touches of lounge, and especially northern soul. At once, they were contemporaries of, and an influence on, bands like Orange Juice.

Vic Godard has long been one of my favorites, and he should be one of yours too. Download a copy of this 1980 show, as well as a special, new, printable issue of Your Heart Out, right here. It even comes with Vic Godard's permission and blessing. Can't beat that.

wow nice blog; my husband Phil Martin's in The Bitter Springs, a fantastic band in their own right, they have also performed as one of the incarnations of Vic's Subway Sect! Last week Vic performed with The Springs at the Wilmington Arms in London and there are some pics of this, as well as the set The Springs did on their own on my husband's website http://www.philmartinmusic.com

Shame you're not in London, there are a couple of really good new northern soul nights happening. I went to one on Thursday at The Social in Little Portland Street. Kevin Rowland was guest DJing - looking sharp - and sang acapella over a few of the tracks. Fantastic!!

Man, the folks who run the Social really know what they're doing. I'd be there in a hot second if I could.

I heard Rowland as a guest DJ on 6 Music a couple of years back and he did the same thing. He played classic old R&B and sang along over the record. It was fantastic listening. He sounded great.
