Movie of the Week: Kmart Store Background Music & Announcement Cassettes

From the uploader: OK, I have to admit this this is a strange collection. In the late 1980's and early 1990's, I worked for Kmart behind the service desk and the store played specific pre-recorded cassettes issued by corporate. This was background music, or perhaps you could call it elevator music. Anyways, I saved these tapes from the trash during this period and this video shows you my extensive, odd collection.

Until around 1992, the cassettes were rotated monthly. Then, they were replaced weekly. Finally sometime around 1993, satellite programming was intoduced which eliminated the need for these tapes altogether.

The older tapes contain canned elevator music with instrumental renditions of songs. Then, the songs became completely mainstream around 1991. All of them have advertisements every few songs.

The monthly tapes are very, very, worn and rippled. That's becuase they ran for 14 hours a day, 7 days a week on auto-reverse. If you do the math assuming that each tape is 30 minutes per side, that's over 800 passes over a tape head each month.

Finally, one tape in the collection was from the Kmart 30th anniversary celebration on 3/1/92. This was a special day at the store where employees spent all night setting up for special promotions and extra excitement. It was a real fun day, the store was packed wall to wall, and I recall that the stores were asked to play the music at a much higher volume. The tape contains oldies and all sorts of fun facts from 1962. This may have been one of the last days where Kmart was in their heyday - really!

One last thing for you techies, the stores built in the early 1970's (such as Naperville, IL Ogden Mall Kmart #3066, Harwood Heights, IL #3503 and Bridgeview, IL #4381) orignally had Altec-Lansing amplifiers with high quality speakers throughout the store. When you applied a higher quality sounding source, the audio was extremely good. Later stores had cheaper speakers and eventually the amps were switched out with different ones usually lacking bass and treble controls.

The tapes are available for listening at Archive.org. Amazing!

Stupefied: The Gillian McCain Playlist

Gillian McCain through the lens of Kate Simon
This week's edition of Stupefied is brought to you by a woman of refined taste, Gillian McCain. Most of you will be familiar with her from her work with Legs McNeil on the genre defining oral history of punk, Please Kill Me. If you still haven't read it, what are you waiting for?!

In the meantime, Gillian is involved with a couple of literary projects which I'm not at liberty to discuss just yet...but rest assured, as soon as I can, I will. A big thank you to Gillian for the list!

The Asphodells mix - DJ'd with passion, spun by lust

As mentioned last week, The Asphodells new album - a Andrew Weatherall & Timothy Fairplay partnership - is now out & about. The mix by Weatherall below will give you an idea of what you're in for. For my money, Weatherall is the only producer/DJ out there today who, almost effortlessly, bridges the gap between the old(er) and the new, and puts it into a perspective that I'm willing to buy. Bonus points for the Human League inclusion.

As The Quietus says in a recent review of the album, "The success of Ruled By Passion Destroyed By Lust lies in a number of differing factors that add up to one almighty whole. Weatherall's ability to cherry-pick any number of wildly differing influences without relying on any one in particular is remarkable in itself but the fact that he and Fairplay consistently come up with something that's their own is a talent to be lauded."

Stupefied: The Mick Farren Playlist

Following last week's Stupefied playlist by Andrew Loog Oldham, I'm thrilled to follow it up this week with a list by yet another cultural lynchpin of mine, Mick Farren. His blog, Doc 40, was one of the main inspirations behind me starting this site way back in 2007, and his memoir, Give The Anarchist A Cigarette, remains one of my all time favorite rock reads. Check his extensive bibliography here. Take it away Mick!

MICK FARREN’S TOP TWENTY

Okay, so here are the twenty songs that I’d have with me on some existential desert island, or locked in a Machiavellian padded cell for that matter. All I ask is Eva Green for company and a case of Jack Daniels otherwise I’ll be licking toads. But I’d rather avoid island or cells since I have a lot to do and am definitely not getting any younger. Since I retired back to the UK the almost original Deviants (Andy Colquhoun on guitar, he’s only been with us 30 years) have played some sporadic shows and will do more. A bunch of recordings are in the can while we wonder what to do with them. And on the literary front Penny Ante editions has published a neat little novella called Road Movie and Headpress are about to come out with a mighty collection of my writing from 1967 to the present titled Elvis Died For Somebody’s Sin But Not Mine. And the fun and fury rolls on at doc40.blogspot.co.uk.
- Mick Farren, January 2013

Stupefied: The Andrew Loog Oldham Playlist

Publishing these Stupefied playlists every week just keeps getting better and better. This week, in honor of my interview with him published at Perfect Sound Forever last week, I'm particularly proud to present a playlist from Andrew Loog Oldham. Its not often that you can say an iconic rock & roll band's manager was (or is) as iconic as the band themselves, but in this case its true. If Ian Stewart was "the sixth Stone," then Oldham has the to be the seventh. If not the the sixth and a half.

These days, Oldham has a widely listened to radio show on the Underground Garage channel of Sirius XM satellite radio. He has also published several autobiographical books over the last bunch of years that include Stoned, 2 Stoned, Rolling Stoned (a compendium of sorts of Stoned and 2 Stoned), and Stone Free - a book that takes a look at why he did what he did in the first place, as well as his influences. See them all here.

Lastly, he's recently resurrected the Andrew Oldham Orchestra to record ...Play The Rolling Stones Songbook, Volume 2 which will be released in March. Originally started as a studio side project in the mid sixties, the "orchestra" released four albums of instrumental cover versions - the best known being The Rolling Stones Songbook. Guests on the new release include Gary Lucas, Elliot Easton, Christine Ohlman, Vashti Bunyan, Rafael Atijas, Ché Aimee Dorval, the High Dials, Johnny Marr, Juan Galeano, Pablo Memi, The Chesterfield Kings, and Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals.

...And with that...I give to you...The Andrew Loog Oldham playlist!

Seasonal Playlist: Change In Rhythm by Fleamarket Funk

Here's something to heat things up - an original mix by Fleamarket Funk's very own DJ Prestige...

For quite a while now I've wanted to put together a mix that featured a bunch of drum breaks, original samples, atmospheric OST's and snippets of a small portion of the vinyl that I have in my crates. What was stopping me really, was just doing it. I wanted to do a mix that celebrated the drum in Funk, Soul, Jazz & beyond. It had to be all vinyl, all original, and in 1 take. There are a lot of records on here that you may recognize. Original Samples from Idris Muhammad, Isaac Hayes, Black Ivory, JJ Johnson among others sit side by side to movie soundtracks, Saturday morning cartoons, college Jazz bands, TV themes, Latin vibes, Hard Bop, interesting cover songs and production from people like David Axelrod, Creed Taylor, and the like. I'm hoping this will be the first in a series of mixes like this, and that you all can appreciate something a little different from me here at Flea Market Funk. It was done all in one take live, so dig on the clicks, pops, and improvised flow. - DJ Prestige

Check out more of his mixes here, and be sure to check in on the oft-updated Fleamarket Funk here.

Stream bonus cuts from House of Love deluxe reissue

As mentioned back in October, Cherry Red Records is readying a mega-super-sexy reissue of the debut album from The House of Love. It will be available in early December. As a teaser, they've made a couple of the bonus tracks available on Soundcloud.

The House of Love deluxe reissue is available to order from Amazon here or direct from Cherry Red here.

"Hold On Me" would be recorded by the band, but shelved for about ten years until band leader Guy Chadwick released his one & only solo album in 1998 on the Setanta label. "I Don't Know Why I Love You" eventually was released as the band's second single once they had moved on from Creation Records to Fontana in 1989.
