Audio of the Week: Noise The Show #18, #19, #21, #24 with Tim Sommer, WNYU (1981)

Courtesy of Everybody Wants What the Next Guy's Got, we'll now be able to enjoy digitized rare tapes of the infamous WNYU show, Noise The Show, hosted by Tim Sommer, in the early 80's. And he did a real nice job in annotating each episode.

In the summer of 2014, I went googling to see if any episodes of Noise The Show were on youtube (there are) or on blogs similar to this one (there are.) I even stumbled across a facebook group dedicated to the show. Earlier this year, a group member mentioned having a box of tapes of a bunch of episodes, and lacked the gear necessary to digitize them. I spoke up and offered to get these tapes into a format that’s sharable on the internets. Which brings us to this post. Continued at the following link:

Just Because: Lou Reed on WPIX in 1979

Loaded: Lou Reed & John Cale at Lou's house in New York, Christmas 1977 - by Kate Simon
Originally surfacing a little over a year ago, I was listening to this wonderful bit of audio ephemera tonight, and then came upon the Soundcloud upload...This guest DJ spot by Lou Reed on WPIX in 1979 is definitely worth a listen - if you've heard it before, or especially if you haven't. There's great music & talk, Lou takes calls, and does what he was great at, i.e. being Lou. John Cale shows up at one point as well. You can skip segment #12 if you're pressed for time as that has nothing to do with Lou's appearance.

You don't really hear people who speak like this any longer. From Lou, to the call in guests, there's a definite NY in the accent as well as some slight neurosis & attitude.

New Sounds: The Art of Tom Waits

Ain't nothin' much going on 'round here but the rent. Meantime, I was pleasantly surprised to find out about about this Tom Waits special that WNYC ran today on John Schaefer's New Sounds show. Enjoy...

Citywide: James Chance, James Brown, Punk, Funk and the Free Jazz Connection

James Chance at CBGB by Eugene Merinov
As a sort of sister piece to James Chance's recent guest DJ spot on WNYU's Shake 'Em On Down,  he also sat down with the station's Micah Loewinger, and discussed some of his musical influences - specifically James Brown, and the point where punk met funk via free jazz - on the show Citywide. James' interview is the first half of the show.

Movie of the Week: The Evil Dr. Woe

Sometime in 1983 or thereabouts, after watching too many kung fu movies, some friends got together, smoked some weed, and decided to make a radio version of what they had been watching. This is the second of two episodes.

Jim Riecken RIP

Jerry Rubino remembers longtime friend, and WFDU DJ, Jim Riecken

R.I.P. "Your Ol' Pal" Jim Riecken:

I've been trying to figure out all day what to say here. A lot has been going through my head since I first heard last September that Jim only had a year or so to live. Not only about Jim, but life itself.

I first met Jim when I started at WFDU-FM in spring of 1981. He had already been at the station for a few years or so. He, like the other small "new music" staff at the time, all came from different backgrounds and areas of New Jersey. But our love of music brought us together. Many of the on-air personalities at at the station came and went over the years, but Jim never left. He gave up his overnights for a handful of years, and for most of his tenure at the station, spent almost every Saturday night at the station, for the love of music and playing music for the tri-state area that HE thought EVERYONE should like. I don't think he missed more than 5 shows before the beginning of this year. Jim did a lot not only for the artists he played, but built one of the most dedicated group of listeners and station supporters over the years.

All of Jim's shows were an pleasant adventure. Not only musically, but what Jim talked about and ranted about in-between the music. Of course I will miss this, but most of all I will miss the guy who did and said what he believed in.

I'm happy that a few weeks ago I was able to see Jim, chat a bit, listen to him talk about The Bowery Boys and make me smile with him one last time.

As it was best fit, Jim left us all, last night, on a Saturday. He wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I'm gonna miss you big time, Jim........

It was 33 years ago today: New York's lost new wave radio station, PIX 102, signs off the air

Starting with a one minute commercial for the long gone Soho record store, Rocks In Your Head, check out this incredible video comp of station ID's and commercials for a short lived (but loved by those who listened & remember) New York City radio station, PIX 102, located at 101.9 on your FM dial. An idea that was ahead of its time, the station's format was on the air for only about a year.

I was reminded of it this morning when a friend posted about it on Facebook, saying "Thirty three years ago today, my favorite radio station signed off the air. WPIX-FM was an amazing and bold radio station, the kind of thing that could only have happened in New York at that time and I was blessed to be there then. The station's format, loosely described as "Elvis to Elvis" played everything from Nervous Norvus and Eddie Cochran to Lene Lovich and Wazmo Nariz. They broadcast live concerts with the Police, The Members, XTC, and many more. The station is name checked in the Squeeze song "I Think I'm Go Go." Frank Zappa hosted afternoon drive every day during Thanksgiving week. The format lasted only a little more than a year..."

Long time metropolitan area DJ, Dan Neer, has a nice remembrance of the station at his website, here.

What Rotten Played On Capital Radio in July ’77

About ten days ago, writer Barney Hoskyns posted the playlist from Johnny Rotten's Capital Radio appearance (July 15, 1977, on the Tommy Vance show) over at Rock's Back Pages, and linked to my old post about the show. Just for the hell of it, here's a Spotify playlist of MOST of the music selected by Mr. Lydon/Rotten from that day. I was able to find 19 of the 24 tracks from the track listing.

If you'd like to hear or download the original broadcast, jump into the wayback machine.

Searching For Sugar Man and other docs of note

I remember when Light In The Attic reissued some Rodriguez stuff a few years ago – I blew it off at the time because he sounded like Jose Feliciano to me. I don’t mind Jose at all, but didn’t buy the hype on Rodriguez - one Jose was enough, right? Anyway, I finally saw the movie about Rodriguez last night, and the story of what happened to him via South Africa, and the film did an incredible job of putting everything in perspective. The story really blew me away, and I especially loved it from the point of view of the South Africans who searched him out. Real music fans, you know? Go see this film...pure inspiration!

Rodriguez is currently playing limited shows including August 31 at the Highline Ballroom here in New York. For his entire touring itinerary click here.

Also of note, and coming to Film Forum here in NYC later this fall, are two movies I plan on going to see:
