Bad Brains new album, Woodstock Film Fest, smoking herb with Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields(?) partaking of the sacred herb with HR of the Bad Brains back in the day.

The above candid shot was posted to the Flipside mag facebook page today, and it seemed as good a time as any to mention the new Bad Brains album. Into The Future, self produced by the band, will be released on Nov. 20 via Megaforce Records. If you want to check out the title track, you can do that here. The band are into their 35th year of existence.

In other news, the Woodstock Film Festival (Woodstock NY) will be screening Band In DC - about the Bad Brains, as well as Charles Bradley: Soul of America, about the Daptone Records very own Screaming Eagle of Soul.

Wednesday, July 4, 1984

Today is 28 years to the day that I played the last gig with my high school punk band, Chappaquiddick +5, at CBGB. It was also the final gig for Jesse Malin’s Heart Attack, and quite possibly the first gig for the Cro-Mags. Holy crap…have a nice holiday all.

Movie crazy! Bad Brains! DC punk! Bob Marley!

The great films just keep on coming...The Bad Brains documentary, A Band In DC, was recently shown in Austin for SxSW. Keep up with future screenings at their official website. I still get goose bumps when I listen to them.



Salad Days: The DC Punk Revolution is a new film in progress, and is due out next year. Here are a couple of trailers to whet your appetite. This week, just for the hell of it, I'll be running some live punk/hardcore concerts here. Hat tip to Garage Punk Hideout for the links...Today we have the Bad Brains, filmed at the arguable peak of their powers, in 1982 at CBGB. Easily one of the best live bands I've ever witnessed, if you've never seen them, or this performance DVD, you're in for a treat. Purchase on DVD.

Back in the day - NYHC

Its funny how you can run into old acquaintances on the internet. This morning I was alerted by a small item Jeremiah ran today called Hardcore New York. A reader had pointed him to a great set of photos that someone named Brooke Smith had sent into Street Carnage - two of them are here - be sure to check all of them them out. Thats Dr. Know of the Bad Brains above. I can't quite place who that is below but it's on the tip of my tongue. See all of the photos here.

Anyway, I knew Brooke back in the very early 90's. We were both living in Rockland County at the time. Somehow we met, and hung out a bit. We weren't particularly close as I recall, but I've always remembered her for some reason. And there she is in 2011! At the time, she was acting, and was shooting Silence of the Lambs - she plays the girl who gets trapped in the well near the beginning. And judging by her IMDB page, it looks like she's been pretty busy ever since. Brooke, if you're out there, drop me a line.

thanks for letting us stay at 171 A ,when we were struggling in the streets of NYC like lost run away Hardcore slaves, for letting us sleep on the stage and under the control room ,and sharing your soaked and dry sunflower seeds, not to mention your Manna bread, and your old school soggy pin joints, thanks for your big brotherly wisdom and patience, and most of all our classic ROIR cassette which blazed the music world with it's message of peace and love, thanks for mixing us live, although you would def me with feedback, thanks for those cashews, and soy milk when I was hungry and had the munchies, we love you man, I can see you now all sweaty in your scuba suit with that white SG, I can hear you now saying "whut's up bruther" with that southern accent - I'd say Jerry "bumba clot"! you'd say whut! Bumper Crop!

There's so much to thank you for Jerry, that I will conclude this by simply saying long live the legacy of the one Jay Dubs! May his kind spirit and giving sharing ways continue to spread throughout the world, through our music and the works of us all, we know who we are, if you are from the 171 A era and family or from any era and family connected to Jerry Williams or not - 1 love J DUBS

Jerry Williams - RIP. Jerry played a hugely important role in the early days of the New York hardcore scene of the early 80's. Read about it over at Achilles In the Alleyway.

171 Avenue A - A rehearsal & recording studio run by a friend to early NYC hardcore, Jerry Williams. Most notable for the Bad Brains debut album being recorded there, as well as the Beastie Boys debut, the Polly Wog Stew EP. It was also the original location of the first Ratcage Records store & label.
