X marks the date: 2013 X (the band) edition calendar available!

Shot by Michael Hyatt

The X calendar by photographer Michael Hyatt is back! I first featured this special collection back at the end of 2009 when he had the 2010 edition ready to ship. Completely worth it at a very affordable $18 (shipping included), you can see some sample photos & much more at Michael's website. Now you can have John, Exene, Billy & Don, all year long!

Damn! If I had known about this earlier I would have included it in our holiday gift guide. Oh well.

More film - Graham Parker, Exene Cervenka, Basquiat

In other film news, here are a few things that I'll be looking out for:

Michael Gramaglia, director of the excellent End of the Century: the story of the Ramones, has turned his cameras on Graham Parker for his next project. Being that this blog is named after one his songs, I'd pretty much be a complete jackass if I didn't mention this project. Plus it looks like it's going to be pretty good. View a trailer, and make a donation to the project at Kickstarter.

Exene Cervenka of X has exhumed an old film, shot with friends in 1986, called Bad Day. Included in the cast of this irony laced western are Chris Desjardins, Dave Alvin, John Doe, and Kevin Costner. Exene has seen fit to make the entire film available as a pay-what-you-want download via the film's official website. All she asks in return is that downloaders not share the actual file, but steer friends to the film's website to donate & download it themselves. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the Gulf Coast aid organization the Committee for Plaquemines Recovery that helps the people affected in the Gulf region.

Lastly, we have Jean Michel Basquiat - The Radiant Child, from Tamra Davis.

X (the band) calendar

Just wanted to let everyone know that I received my copy of the 2010 calendar put together by photographer Michael Hyatt, and X vocalist Exene Cervenka, and it's beautiful. If you're shopping online this weekend, don't forget about it - it would well be worth the $20 (postage included). For ordering info click here.

X marks the date

Here's a unique rock & roll gift suggestion for yourself, or that special someone in your life who happens to be an X fan. It's a revived collaboration between photographer Michael Hyatt, and X vocalist, Exene Cervenka. Here's the blurb:

"In 1982 we created the first Gallery 1331 Xerography Calendar featuring Michael's photographs and Exene's graphics illustrating dates of musical and historical importance. Because 2010's calendar matches 1982 accurately, except for moon phases, we have created the 2010 Gallery 1331 "X" Calendar that reprises Exene's 1982 graphics and features 19 of Michael's best photographs of X shot 1980-1983.

Some of these photographs are part of the Lucky 13 X Box Set of Postcards. That limited edition of 1300 sets is nearly sold out. Only 51 sets are still available at $13 each, plus $2 postage. The 2010 calendar is priced at $20, postage paid. Order both by December 31st and pay no postage. Enjoy all of 2010 with X the band photographs and Exene's graphics, plus bonus information about Leslie Caldera's 30th Anniversary Commemorative "X" Stamps featuring Michael's photographs."

I can personally speak to the high quality of the merchandise as I purchased a set of Michael's X postcards a while back, and was really happy with what I received. Visit his website or email him here to order.

And while we're at it, X has a new digital single out for Christmas, I mean Xmas, called Merry Xmas from X (Jingle Bells b/w Santa Claus Is Coming To Town). You can sample and buy it from iTunes, eMusic, or Amazon.

The hippies dig some punk

Things got pleasantly all punk rock this week over at Wolfgang's Vault...Here's a preview, including cuts from the Nuns & the Avengers when they opened for the Sex Pistols at their last show in San Francisco in January 1978. Everything is kicked off, fittingly enough, by the MC5's spiritual advisor, Brother J.C. Crawford.

Exene's announcement

Although it's been fairly widely reported already, I wanted to mention it here since I just saw X play last weekend. Exene Cervenka has announced that she has Multiple Sclerosis. See her full announcement here. Thanks to friend Ed Ward for pointing this out to me first.

Daily travels - Bowery Ballroom edition

X - Bowery Ballroom, NYC - May 30, 2009

I went to see X on Saturday night at the Bowery, and they were as great as ever. An almost two hour set saw them cover pretty much their entire career. Included was a beautiful acoustic version of "See How We Are" by John & Exene. If you have a chance to see them then go!
