Great Zoogz Rift! 25 Episodes of New Wave Theatre!

This classic show has been bouncing around for a while in different shapes, sizes & formats, but someone has finally gone and put all 25 episodes up on YouTube. New Wave Theatre, along with Glenn O'Brien's TV Party, can be looked at as one of the better examples of cool in the oasis of mayhem that was early cable TV.

Performances included are by Dead Kennedys, Fear, Plugz, Johanna Wendt, Carnival of Souls, Zoogz Rift, Geza X, Legal Weapon, Unknowns, Angry Samoans, D.I., Los Microwaves, Vox Pop, Circle Jerks, Rayonix, Levi Dexter & the Tribe, UXA, The Blasters, 45 Grave, The Models, X, The Church, Bad Religion, Suburban Lawns, and many others.

The playlist below shows all 25 shows. If you want to see them one at a time, I suggest going to the uploader's YouTube page, and beginning there.

Hat tip to Dangerous Minds.

Movie of the Week: Tower Records 1971

Wow...this makes me want to cry. Vintage Los Angeles dug up this incredible footage shot in Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard in 1971. Just astounding...

Movie of the Week: Urban Struggle (1981)

After recently reading Jack Grisham's (TSOL) book, An American Demon, this rarely seen documentary charting the final days of punk club, The Cuckoo's Nest, located in Orange County, California, seems appropriate. Good stuff.

By the way, I highly recommend Grisham's book. He was one sick puppy back in the day.

Stupefied: The Alice Bag Playlist

This week's edition of of the Stupefied Playlist© is brought to us by legendary LA punk rocker, Alice Bag. Arguably, Los Angeles could be credited with being at the forefront when it came to a musical movement known for being (mostly) equal opportunity. Go ahead and name the bands - the Alley Cats, X, Alice's very own Bags, the Go Go's, the Germs, 45 Grave, Legal Weapon, and others I'm sure, all had prominent female members if they weren't fronted by women. And Alice has always been in the thick of it.

A vocal defender of women's (and human) rights, Alice is still an active performer and writer. Her recent memoir, Violence Girl: East L.A. Rage to Hollywood Stage/A Chicana Punk Story, tells the fantastic & true story of growing up in East LA during the sixties & seventies, and is well worth a read. Visit her sites below, check out her work, and go see her if she's playing a gig near you.

Big thanks to Alice for this wonderful playlist!

Dimmed lights on the Sunset Strip

Fittingly, The Whisky, the Roxy and The Viper Room dimmed their lights last night for 10 minutes in Ray Manzarek's honor. A touching tribute on the Sunset Strip. Photo courtesy of Carlo Asciutti & Daisy.
