The Psychedelic Furs - Tarrytown Music Hall, Tarrytown NY, 3.22.12

Reviewed by Liz Maher for Stupefaction - thanks Liz!:

What does a psychedelic fur sound like? Tasty, droning crossover riffs played out on a no-exit David Lynch highway to Samsara about 50 miles east of Bakersfield maybe? P Furs, as the name goofs you, are all about the crossover sensation. They formed up in the U.K. in1977, but were easily three decades ahead of their time – in an astringent, numbing way – when, at the height of punk - Richard Butler and brother Tim formed a DIY no-wave band. They fused pop and psychedelic, then turned it down a notch to create more commercial sounds that answered the question: What if David Bowie simultaneously decided to compose muzak and reject Brian Eno? The P Furs, were the answer. Thirty-five years on and they have outlasted other psychedelic revivals and resurrections such as Pink Floyd, the Killers and the Soup Dragons. We’ll see how the Horrors fare. Continued after the jump...

Psychedelic Furs in Bearsville NY

What with Wire announcing a new album, Killing Joke with a new album and North American tour dates, the Sisters of Mercy announcing new dates for their 30th anniversary, and even a new song from the Cars, many so called 80's bands have never really stopped, but they seem to be emerging again, after many years, in a big way.

As mentioned last month, the Psychedelic Furs played a couple of warm up shows here in the northeast before leaving for the UK & Europe. I saw them last night at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY, and they were way beyond any meager expectations I had. Richard Butler performs with such a comfortable joy it's hard not to go along with him. Hitting the stage promptly at 9:00PM, the first set was their track by track performance of the Talk Talk Talk album. Following a short break they came back and performed a best of set which concluded with an absolutely barn burning encore of "India." Like I said, WAY beyond any expectations I had. It also helped that the Bearsville has a capacity of around 400. If the Furs are playing near you I wholeheartedly encourage you to go.

And speaking of "eighties" bands, click on over to This Ain't the Summer of Love for a write up & a whole lot of video of a recent Jason & the Scorchers show in Minneapolis.

Pictures On My Wall - Richard Butler

And since we're on the subject of the Psychedelic Furs, its a good time to bring in Mr. Richard Butler for the next installment of Pictures On My Wall. A longtime resident of New York City, Butler has been painting longer than he's been singing in a rock 'n' roll band.

Starting October 1 and running through December 3, he'll be the subject of three different shows in New York City - quite impressive! Click here for all of the gallery information including locations, and hours. And be sure to visit Richard Butler Studio for the official experience.

Psychedelic Furs to perform Talk Talk Talk in Woodstock

The Psychedelic Furs, who have been busy touring (and played NYC this past June), will be playing a couple of low key warm up dates prior to taking their Talk Talk Talk tour to the UK and Europe. One will be October 14 in Fairfield CT. And the second one, which I plan on being at, will October 15 at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock NY. Every once in a while the Bearsville gets a show by a band that would be playing a venue much larger in NYC which is always a very welcome opportunity.
