My favorite new band: the Bakersfield Breakers

No, they're not from California. The Bakersfield Breakers are a three-piece instrumental group from New York City that formed in 2010. The band consists of good old guitar, bass, and drums and its mission is to reawaken the classic guitar-driven sound of 1950’s Bakersfield (CA) and the driving tunes of 1960’s surf rock. In addition to its large catalog of covers, the group also perform originals that fit perfectly with the vintage vibe and gigs can last anywhere from forty-five minutes to three hours. Currently gigging around the northeast, have a listen to their new album (In The Studio With...), buy a copy, and catch them live if you can!

Surf's Up: Nightclubbing catches a wave with the Raybeats

This week, Pat & Emily of Nightclubbing revisit the often underrated Raybeats - a band formed from the ashes of the short lived No Wave scene. If you've never heard them, the Raybeats probably don't sound like what you'd expect from former members of the Contortions and 8-Eyed Spy.

In 1980, the pendulum swung again for four of No Wave’s most influential musicians. Jody Harris, Donny Christensen and George Scott III were veterans of the Contortions and Pat Irwin had performed with George in 8-Eyed Spy with Lydia Lunch. They were done with moody lead singers and wanted to try another way. They formed The Raybeats. Continued here.

Here's the band performing in 1980 at Danceteria:

NYNS - New York's a lonely town

...when you're the only surfer boy around. The Trade Winds hit the charts on Red Bird Records in 1965 with a surf record about that hot bed of surfing, New York City. Or, more specifically, missing their home state of California after moving to New York.

"I feel so bad each time I look out there and fi-I-ind
My woodie's outside
Covered with snow
Cold winds will blow now
New Yorks a lonely town
When you're the only surfer boy around"

As autumn slowly starts turning to winter, you don't need to be a surfer to know how they feel. Later on, versions by Dave Edmunds would appear on bootlegs proclaiming both New York and London lonely towns for surfer boys. Special thanks to the London Nobody Sings.
