NY Public Library Record Sale at Lincoln Center in August

Speaking of Lincoln Center, the Ponderosa Stomp announced today their New York City show for this summer in partnership with the Lincoln Center Out of Doors series. This year's show centers around talent from Detroit and looks to be quite the day:

Godlis at Barnes & Noble last night

Godlis' photo stamp of authenticity inspired by...



Last nights' event at the 66th St/Broadway Barnes & Noble was a lot of fun. Who Shot Rock and Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-Present author/curator, Gail Buckland, and legendary NYC music photographer, Godlis, put on the great show.

Things started with Buckland doing a short talk & reading about her love of photography, and her life long pursuit in studying it, as well as her ongoing attempts to bring music photographers, specifically, into the pantheon of great and artistic photography. So far, so good, Gail!



This was followed by a wonderful, and very funny, slideshow and talk by Godlis that covered his life & career in photography. He discussed many of his influences, and was able to describe what he saw in his head as he took many of his famous shots...and all delivered with a slightly dry, down to earth sense of humor & fun, which always makes him a pleasure to spend time with.


Godlis with Bob Gruen who was in the audience, and later joined Godlis & Buckland at the book signing table.

Fields added to All Hopped Up event

This just in: Rock 'n roll hero, Danny Fields, has been added to Tony Fletcher's event at Barnes & Noble as originally reported last Wednesday.

Here are a couple of snaps from last Saturday in Woodstock. Judging by the packed room (maybe 150 attendees?) it was a huge success. Besides the author, all guests made themselves available for autographs & conversation following the main event:

Godlis tonight at Barnes & Noble

Godlis, one of Stupefaction's very favorite photographers, is appearing tonight at Barnes & Noble at 1792 Broadway in Manhattan to discuss his work in the continuing discussion regarding the Brooklyn Museum's Who Shot Rock & Roll exhibit.

"When I got to NYC in 1976, I was looking for work as a photographer’s assistant to pay the bills. Eventually I landed a steady job, and looked for a place to hang out and hear music. There weren’t very many clubs that didn’t have cover bands, and I’d seen that picture of Patti Smith and Bob Dylan that kind of tipped me off to CBGB’s, so I went in there to see what was going on. I had also seen copies of Punk magazine and Rock Scene at a newsstand at Penn Station. The first time I went to CBGB’s I saw Television and figured out pretty quickly that there were some like-minded Velvet Underground fans in this place. I had found my new hangout. It didn’t hurt that I got in for free." Read a great interview with Godlis on Facebook.

This weekend, if you happen to be in the area of Woodstock, NY, in conjunction with the Golden Notebook, there will be a reading & signing for Tony Fletcher’s new book All Hopped Up and Ready to Go: Music from the Streets of New York 1927-77.

There will also be a panel discussion about the NYC music scene, featuring:

Liquid Liquid at Lincoln Center

Here's a review of the Lincoln Center show from Saturday.

The Liquid Liquid portion is brief but good: "After so overwhelming a display of maximalist firepower, Liquid Liquid’s spare, insistent funk provided welcome contrast. The group’s lean, propulsive mix of disco, dub and punk elements, fashioned with the vocalist Salvatore Principato’s quasi-nonsensical keening and yelping, Dennis Young’s perky marimba, Richard McGuire’s throbbing bass lines and the drummer Scott Hartley’s rock-steady beat, has had an incalculable impact among hip-hop and postrock circles. Here, as if preserved in amber, the group sounded as tight, kinetic and provocative as ever."

In the opening paragraph, it says LL played at Paradise Garage - does anyone know if that's true? It also says there were 10,000 at the show on Saturday. It was packed, very crowded, but that number seems high to me.
