Movie of the Week: Bryan Ferry Live In Tokyo (1977)

After seeing Bryan Ferry a few days ago, I came across this gem shot for Japanese television back in 1977 on the In Your Mind tour. Hope you enjoy it. I can't think of anyone else who even comes close to so successfully marrying rock & roll, and the style of a more traditional vocalist. Elegance is the operative word.

Getting ready to see Roxy: Roxette (1977)

Here's an intriguing, but frustratingly short, excerpt from a 1977 documentary about Roxy Music fans entitled Roxette. As the description says, "Extract from a student documentary profiling young Roxy Music fans. In the full film fans talk about the band and the music, are seen out and about in Manchester and getting ready for a concert at the Opera House. Includes footage of a tribute band, who due to a lack of musical instruments use household appliances to make music."

Proxy Music - Yes!

Thanks to my pal, Gary W, for turning me on to this...the best cover version I've heard since Tropic of Cancer did "Upside Down." It's new UK band Proxy Music. I'm guessing they're mostly a Roxy tribute band, or maybe thats how they started? Anyway, on June 4 they have an excellent single coming out which is a reworking of "Lucky Number" by Lene Lovich. And yes, it sounds like Roxy Music playing it. The b-side is a more faithful version of Eno's "Baby's On Fire."

The perfect song for an autumnal New York Sunday. Also, tomorrow happens to see the release of the new album from Bryan Ferry entitled Olympia. Never one to shy away from covering songs he likes, one of the tracks featured on this album is "Song To the Siren" by Tim Buckley. Which version do you prefer? Personally I'd go with This Mortal Coil although the acoustic version by Buckley (below) is much better than the album version released a couple of years after this television appearance.

You Can Dance To Roxy In A Dream Home

I was inspired this morning by Lindsay posting the recent appearance of Roxy Music on Jonathan Ross on UK TV. The band's performance is pretty impressive for a unit that hasn't performed as such in...how many years? While posting the Roxy video, I also decided to include the video for the new Bryan Ferry single, "You Can Dance," from his latest album, Olympia, which is of course the occasion that has brought together the original Roxy line-up. I like it a lot. It's nice to see Bryan still has a healthy appreciation for the ladies. Find out more about the album here. Too bad it's not out until October.

Just had this come across my desk (thank you Randy)- news of a November release of a double DVD from Roxy Music. I highly suggest checking this out when available. Maybe about 6 years ago I viewed a similiar collection (in fact, this might be the same in a DVD format) on VHS which completely renewed my interest in this band. Sometimes seeing someone do something can really help.
