The Clash and The Damned messing around 1979
Worth it for the uke & spoons arrangement of New Rose with the Strummer vocal. And how about Scabies on the piano? The Damned were much more talented than they ever got credit for. Did any of this end up on that DVD that came with the London Calling reissue a few years ago? Via DM.

Kyle's Cassettes: Kashif - Condition of the Heart
The following was inspired by Kashif's Condition of the Heart (Arista Records, 1985):
I used to work with this bald headed chick that I always mentally referred to as ‘Curly’. I realize that this, at its absolute best, might seem only slightly juvenile, however I never actually called her this to her face nor did I ever do so behind her back amongst other free-thinking, like minded colleagues. I’d like to think that my character is not comprised of an entirely blasé fabric, but I guess, if it’s not already apparent, that it is actually pretty debatable.
I should probably also make it clear that her hairless existence wasn't exactly by choice, rather it was the result of a fairly circumstantial series of events. It had something to do with a particularly aggressive set of dreadlocks she had in the late nineties. Apparently you can wrap them too tight and if your not careful you can end up on what I like to call a, “permanent dreadlock holiday.”
This was her story at least and I’m no barber or anything so I just took it at face value because it just didn’t seem right to question that sort of alibi. The finer tenets of African American hair care leave me feeling, how should I put it, out of my depth. Probably the less said about it the better. Continued after the jump...

The Psychedelic Furs - Tarrytown Music Hall, Tarrytown NY, 3.22.12
Reviewed by Liz Maher for Stupefaction - thanks Liz!:
What does a psychedelic fur sound like? Tasty, droning crossover riffs played out on a no-exit David Lynch highway to Samsara about 50 miles east of Bakersfield maybe? P Furs, as the name goofs you, are all about the crossover sensation. They formed up in the U.K. in1977, but were easily three decades ahead of their time – in an astringent, numbing way – when, at the height of punk - Richard Butler and brother Tim formed a DIY no-wave band. They fused pop and psychedelic, then turned it down a notch to create more commercial sounds that answered the question: What if David Bowie simultaneously decided to compose muzak and reject Brian Eno? The P Furs, were the answer. Thirty-five years on and they have outlasted other psychedelic revivals and resurrections such as Pink Floyd, the Killers and the Soup Dragons. We’ll see how the Horrors fare. Continued after the jump...

Bahston Hahdcaw: All Ages, The Boston Hardcore Film
If you enjoyed the trailers for the Bad Brains, and DC punk scene documentaries that I posted a few days ago, this ought to be of interest to you as well. All Ages tells the story of the Boston hardcore scene from the early to mid eighties. While there were plenty of great bands from Massachusetts at the time, their hardcore thing always left me a little cold...here's hoping this film will tell a better story than what I remember of the time.

Tompkins Square Rolls Out Line of 78 RPM Discs for Record Store Day
With the recently announced full list of special releases for Record Store Day, it can be difficult for a label to separate themselves from the pack. One way to do it is is to follow Tompkins Square's example - release some 78 r.p.m. discs! Luckily I have a record player that can play at 78 so this will not be an issue for me!
San Francisco-based record label Tompkins Square announces the first in a series of releases in the 78 rpm 10" vinyl format.
The first two will feature previously unreleased recordings from Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), and Ralph Stanley. Both 78's will be released as a limited edition of 500 copies on Record Store Day, April 21, 2012.
Luther Dickinson plays medleys of Southern melodies on his 78, including "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah/Beautiful Dreamer" on the A side and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen/Peace in the Valley" on the B side. Ralph Stanley's 78 features "Single Girl", with "Little Birdie" on the B side.
Tompkins Square owner Josh Rosenthal comments, "A lot of new turntables play 78's, and many 78 collectors listen to their records on modern equipment. Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe have all recently released 78's. So I thought it would be fun to start a line of them."
The label will also release a white label 45 of Hiss Golden Messenger's "Jesus Shot Me in The Head" from the forthcoming album 'Poor Moon', b/w the unreleased "Jesus Dub," on Record Store Day.
Hiss Golden Messenger's album "Poor Moon" is set for release April 17th, and you can preview the entire album here.

Liza Minnelli at Fame Studios?!
Over at NY Rocker, Andy Schwartz takes the occasion of Liza Minnelli's birthday to tell us about the little known recordings she made with Rick Hall at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, in 1971. What a crazy idea! Read about it, and see the comments of the record executives who passed on the opportunity to release the album, here.

Old Ride, new Dexys and Dr. John...
Hard to believe it's been 20 years since this classic album was released. Producer Alan Moulder was/is always a great choice - especially at this time - and Ride were arguably at their peak with this one. Just fantastic. If you don't believe me, turn your speakers up & listen to the opening track, "Leave Them All Behind":
Keep an eye out for some reissue stuff from the likes of Rhino...and read a review here.
In the meantime, check out this track, "Nowhere Is Home," from the upcoming fourth album from Dexys - Kevin Rowland's latest incarnation of the band. The new album, One Day I'm Going To Soar, is out June 4:
Lastly, jump on over to the Quietus, and check out an exclusive stream of a new Dr. John track, "Revolution." It will be on his new album, Locked Down, out April 2, and produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. It also happens to feature my pal, Brian Olive, on guitar. Yes!
