Movie of the Week: The Cool World (1964)
Shirley Clarke must have been one hip chick. Between this film, The Connection, and Portrait of Jason, its obvious she ran in some very interesting circles. Read what the New York Times thought of The Cool World at the time here.

Leave it to Paul Gorman to dig this up. Ringolevio, A Life Played For Keeps has long been one of my favorite counterculture memoirs. Its author, Emmett Grogan, has often been under-credited, or just plain written out of the history of "the movement" when it comes to the story of San Francisco, and bridging the gap between the beats and the hippies. Read this book, however, and you'll understand that Emmett was the man. He really had it sussed.
Anyway, not only does Paul have some great things to say about the book & its author, he also dug up the incredible clip below of a guest appearance by Grogan on that 70's game show staple, To Tell the Truth. Man, the internet has everything, doesn't it? It even includes Joe Garagiola. This is golden.

SHOWStudio to celebrate William Burroughs centenary with Kate Simon exhibit
SHOWStudio Gallery in London will be celebrating the 100th birthday of William Burroughs with an exhibit of 11 photos of the man by our pal, Kate Simon! The show will open March 13, and will run through May 19. Wish I could be there...The gallery is open from 11:00-6:00, Monday through Friday, and is located at 19 Motcomb St, London, United Kingdom.

Burroughs by Kate Simon to celebrate the occasion of his centenary. The
exhibition will mark the debut release of Simon’s Cibachrome Edition
portfolio, which is comprised of 11 iconic shots of the literary master
printed in the now extinct cibachrome medium. These rare photographs
will be displayed alongside a selection of black and white limited
edition prints. Taken over a 20 year period, Simon has amassed a
critical body of work that is widely unseen and captures the many faces

Swing For A Crime!
One of my all time favorite compilations, I picked up Swing For A Crime sometime back in the 80's on vinyl and haven't looked back since. To my ears, its right up there with the timeless Beat-inspired comp, Pictures From The Gone World (featured here years ago), and has lead me in all sorts of directions as far as listening habits go. Twilightone!, an MP3 blog well worth following, has just posted this album, and if you don't check it out...well, lets just say you should. Comps this good do not grow on trees. Grab it here.

Make "The Connection"
As previously said right here on Stupefaction, "Based on Jack Gelber's play of the same name, The Connection was a 1961 movie by Shirley Clarke, and includes some fantastic footage of Jackie McLean (sax), Freddie Redd (piano), Michael Mattos (bass), and Larry Ritchie (drums) doing their thing. This movie is unfortunately unavailable these days, and I've never seen the whole thing. The soundtrack album is a corker. Listen to clips of it here."
Well, thanks to Milestone Film & Video, its available now. Currently making the rounds in some of the hipper theaters around, it appears that it will be available on DVD later this year or early next year. Keep your eyes on the Milestone site, and while you're there, be sure to pick up a copy of the unbelievable On The Bowery for an amazing film with great historical perspective.

Movie of the Week - Destroy All Rational Thought with William Burroughs

This week's Movie of the Week is a good one. This film features one of the last interviews with Burroughs, and previously unseen vintage footage of him in his prime during the 50s and early 60s. Also featured are The Master Musicians of Joujouka, and experiments that took place in Tangier where William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and the Moroccan painter Hamri taught Jack Kerouac, Timothy Leary, and Allen Ginsberg, how to live outside the law. In addition, there is music from Bill Laswell, The Baby Snakes, plus contributions from Ira Cohen, Hakim Bey, Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy) and many more.
