Memories of Sex

MEMORIES OF SEX FROM FORUM MAGAZINE: One of the most prescient pieces published about 430 King’s Road in its incarnation as SEX appeared, appropriately enough, in sex magazine Forum in the mid-70s. Continued here.

Steve Jones, Unknown, Alan Jones, Chrissie Hynde, Jordan, Vivienne Westwood. By David Dagley, circa 1975.
On a related note, I've been meaning to mention that, after literally a couple of years of waiting, probably the best website dedicated specifically to the Malcolm McLaren/Vivienne Westwood-era of 430 King's Road has finally relaunched! Visit Only Anarchists Are Pretty now!

Now On eBay, Home Movie of Don Kirshner's Son's Bar Mitzvah

Here's an interesting item currently available on eBay - a home movie of Don Kirshner's son's bar mitzvah in 1973 at the Waldorf Astoria here in New York. As the description says: "Silent 16mm home movie of Don Kirshner's son Ricky's Bar Mitzvah in 1973 at the Waldorf. Approx 1200 feet that runs on silent speed. Don Kirshner is notable for many things including Don Kirshner's Dance Party and The Monkees. No vinegar, very slight warping, nice picture and color. Got this a few years ago in a lot with some other films, not knowing what was on it till i got it home. I had someone check with the family and no interest was expressed so here it is now for auction. Tony Orlando and Dawn was one of the entertainment acts as seen and other people look familiar but i am unable to identify anyone ,being born in 1970 i'm just a generation too young. any questions feel free to ask, thanx for looking! Sorry for the poor screen caps but its the best i could do, film looks great!"

New doc alert - The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975

The title of a new documentary recently shown at Sundance caught my eye this morning in one of my RSS feeds. The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 is a new documentary by Swedish director Goran Olson that covers the movement from its beginnings to its seeming demise in the grasp of the drug plague that followed in the 70's. Due to a surprisingly deep stash of vintage, previously unseen, footage found in Sweden (see the trailers below), it looks like this will be something worth seeing despite some lukewarm reviews.

Includes appearances by Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, Louis Farrakhan, Erykah Badu, John Forte, Davis, Abiodun Oyewole, Seale, Melvin Van Peebles, Kathleen Cleaver, Harry Belafonte, Talib Kweli, Robin Kelley.

For a slightly longer trailer, click here. For more on the making of the film, watch executive producer Danny Glover and director Goran Olson discuss their film here.

Hip priest - the photography of Paul McDonough

A bunch of amazing Paul McDonough NYC photographs popped up online recently and reminded me of how great his work is - see them here. I first discovered his work a couple of years ago upon the event of some show or another of his. Click away on the links and appreciate these fantastic shots taken between 1968-1972.

A book of his work, Paul McDonough: New York Photographs 1968-1978, is available from the Umbrage Gallery.

Hip Priest by the Fall

As a somewhat recent story in the NY Times said, "They are ... timeless narratives, perfectly current in their story line. They’re suffused with detail and a lot of wit. And they repay close examination." Continued here.

OMD change NYC venue for March 8 show

The OMD show that I was so excited about a couple of weeks ago has just dropped a couple of notches on the happiness meter. The March 8 show has been moved from Webster Hall to the interminable Terminal 5. Judging by the comments over at Brooklyn Vegan I'm not the only one who is disappointed.
