The Sound - Live 1984

As I've stated before, I love Adrian Borland & the Sound.

All around excellent blog, Egg City Radio, has posted a great live set from the Sound from 1984. It doesn't have any more specifics than that but get on over there & download it!

Buddy Miles - RIP

Buddy Miles - RIP.

"Drummer Buddy Miles, who played with Jimi Hendrix and sang in the claymation commercials featuring the California Raisins in the 1980s, has died. He was 60.

Miles, who had been suffering from congestive heart failure, died Tuesday night in Austin, publicist Duane Lee said."

Guerrilla commentary - Fight the power

Via Media Futurist, here's an excellent video making a commentary on the current state of NYC quality of life issues, i.e. how much advertising we're bombarded with every minute of the day - although the mayor & PD probably wouldn't see it that way.

It reminds me of the fantastic Banksy video about what he did to the Paris Hilton album:

Great graphics

Via Vintage Ads, I love these graphics!

249 Eldridge Street #14

249 Eldridge Street: Where I lived with Jack Rabid from 1984-1986. I moved in a week out of high school. My parents were afraid for me. I think my dad came up the day I moved in & that may have been the only time one of them ever came in. There were dozens of cockroaches, and the place was far from the renovated state most apartments in New York are in these days. I haven't seen so many cockroaches in the years since either. There were prostitutes on Houston Street, and drugs were easily obtainable. Across Houston Street, where Second Avenue ends, was sort of an open area where, in the colder weather, homeless guys constantly had a fire going in a big old oil can.

As the sign outside the Village Voice offices says, "Where have all the junkies gone?" I often wonder about them...along with the cockroaches, prostitutes & homeless people. Those were the days.

Joe Gibbs RIP

Joe Gibbs - RIP.

Culture - Natty Dread Taking Over (MP3, from Two Sevens Clash, produced by Joe Gibbs)

"Last week ended on an unhappy note for reggae fans all over the world. On Friday the news arrived that legendary producer Joe Gibbs had passed away late the previous evening at Kingston's University Hospital of the West Indies from a heart attack. Aged 65, Gibbs leaves behind a phenomenal back catalogue, the bulk of its contents accorded classic status by Jamaican music enthusiasts. However, these songs have also had a truly global impact, inspiring and influencing everything from punk to the very latest British urban music."

Major Lance - Um Um Um Um Um

I found this recently on eBay. Its a 4-song French EP from Major Lance, and I love these graphics. It contains the songs "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um," "Sweet Music," "Hey Little Girl," and "Crying In The Rain."

Major Lance - Um, Um, Um, Um, Um (MP3)

Most people know his biggest hit, "Monkey Time." He worked closely with Curtis Mayfield throughout the 1960's, and practically everything they did together is worth a listen. Here is a great video of the Major performing "Monkey Time" on Shindig...the dance moves, the clothing...impeccable! There's also an unexpected shot of something about 1:35 in that made me laugh out loud. Its definitely worth watching.

Death coming hot & heavy

Morton Savada - RIP:

"Morton J. Savada, who lined the narrow aisles of his store in Midtown Manhattan with nearly a quarter of a million 78-r.p.m. records, offering devotees of King Oliver, Ma Rainey, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman the chance to hear the original sound of nondigital discography, died at his home in Harrison, N.Y., on Feb. 11. He was 85." Continued here.

Teo Macero - RIP:

"Teo Macero, a record producer, composer and saxophonist most famous for his role in producing a series of albums by Miles Davis in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including editing that almost amounted to creating compositions after the recordings, died on Tuesday in Riverhead, N.Y. He was 82 and lived in Quogue, N.Y." Continued here.

DOWNTOWN MUSIC GALLERY NEEDS YOUR HELP! (From Jason's Ya Wei Blog):

"At the end of this past January, our five-year lease ran out here at 342 Bowery. Our landlord has graciously given us another 3-6 months to find another place but, with 4 to 5 times the rent we're paying being offered by bar/restaurants ['cause we know you can't get a drink anywhere around here - NOT!] for the space our stay will come to an end soon." You Can't Always Get What You Want

From my friend Andy comes the JPEG above which was sent to him & details the origins of "Mr. Jimmy" (recently deceased) and the Chelsea Drug in Minnesota from the Stones in their epic "You Can't Always Get What You Want." It's all in the details. According to other sources, the drugstore was in London, but who really knows? I guess Mick Jagger might.

If you can't read it, click on the picture for a bigger version. Thank you Andy...

3 million records follow-up

To follow up on yesterdays post regarding the 3 million records for sale on eBay: With an opening bid of $3,000,000, the winning bid came in at a perhaps disappointing $3,002,150.00. This after reams of publicity & over 230,000 page views.

Hmm...Not a bad haul I suppose, but after buying & storing this stuff for so many years? Also, if you read all of the questions & answers on the auction page, you'll see the seller claims to have turned down an offer of around $25 million about 8 or 9 years ago. D'oh!

Artist and Trickster, 75, Is Dead

Dorothy Podber - RIP.

Here's another excellent piece on this true character of the counter culture. When there was a counter culture.

Anyone got a spare $3 million?

Word of this eBay auction of 3 million records (thats right, 3 million) has been making the rounds recently. All I can say is...I don't know what to say! I think I'm speechless. Obviously this collection should be given to the Archive of Contemporary Music or the Smithsonian, but it sure is nice to fantasize about dedicating the next decade or two towards working on it - listening, cataloging, selling some, etc...

Read an interview with the collector/seller here at the Mojo blog.

Rock is dead, long live rock

Whatever happened to rock & roll? "Cock In My Pocket" by the Stooges came up on my iTunes this morning and gave me a rush...a flashback. It reminded me of the humor & real rebellion in the music. There was actually a time when the status quo was actually threatened by this stuff. Or threatened by someone who professed to listen to it. Ah, the good old days. God bless the Stooges.

I got my cock in my pocket
And I'm reelin' down the old highway
I got my cock in my pocket
And I'm reelin' down the old highway
I'm gonna whip it on you honey, taste your blood today
I got my cock in my pocket
And it's shovin' up through my pants
I got my cock in my pocket
And it's shovin' up through my pants
I just wanna fuck, I don't want no romance
I got my cock in my pocket
