Here's a good one thats been in the works for a while, so keep an eye out for it! Big Gold Dream is a feature length doc from director Grant McPhee, and tells the tale of Scotland’s post-punk & indie music scene circa 1977-1985. It will apparently premiere, naturally, at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on the 19th June.

Friday Ephemera: Postcard Records in Rough Trade Catalog (1981)
Postcard
Records centre spread in a 1981 Rough Trade Distribution Catalogue. The
idea was to pull it out and pin it up on your wall. The illustration and lettering is by Krysia Klasicki who also did the artwork on Josef K’s ‘The Only Fun in Town’ album.

Nectarine No.9 to perform first gig in 10 years!
The Nectarine No.9 have announced their first gig in ten years, and will be performing their amazing Saint Jack album in full at Rutherglen Town Hall, in Glasgow, on June 7th. The album was originally released on the short-lived reincarnated Postcard label back in 1995. Special special guests include Casual Sex, and tickets are available here. If I had dough to burn I would definitely fly over for this one.
For those who don't know, Nectarine No.9 is lead by Davey Henderson, and followed his stints with the Fire Engines, and Win, and preceded his somewhat current band, Sexual Objects - although its sometimes hard to tell with him whats current.

New film alert: The Possibilities Are Endless (Edwyn Collins)
The Possibilities Are Endless is the title of a new documentary about Edwyn Collins, and the illness (to put it mildly) which befell him about nine years ago. Although well documented in the press, as well as in Grace Maxwell's excellent & highly recommended book, Falling & Laughing: The Restoration of Edwyn Collins, the story is very powerful and obviously makes for a great film subject. Directed by Ed Lovelace and James Hall, with music by Edwyn, The Possibilities Are Endless debuted this week at South By Southwest in Austin, TX, and so far the reports have been great. Needless to say, I cannot wait to see this movie!
Be sure to visit their website to sign up for the mailing list. Hopefully this will get some US screenings further afield than Texas.

Who doesn't love a good boxset? Cherry Red to unleash Scared To Get Happy in June
For those with an Anglophilic bend to their tastes, who may have missed out on the 80's indie scene, or for those who want to relive those halcyon days, this box is for you. Cherry Red Records has pulled out all of the stops for this: Five discs of UK indie pop - pure heaven. Out in June, they've even organized a central London show (June 22) featuring ten of the acts included in the set - see flyer at the bottom of this post. I could go on, but I'll let the music speak for itself.
Hard to believe, but this is the first collection of this era of this scale - you'd have thought it was ripe for the picking. 134 tracks in total (with several previously unreleased) including releases from all of our favorite labels like Creation, Postcard, Zoo, el, Cherry Red (natch), Sarah, Kitchenware, etc, etc...Also included is a 54-page book with mucho sleeve-notes regarding each recording and band. Phew!
Order Scared To Get Happy here (US), direct from Cherry Red, or demand it at your favorite retailer!

What Presence! The Rock Photography of Harry Papadopoulos now available
Harry Papadopoulos began his photographic career outside the Apollo in Glasgow, flogging photographs to gig-goers. He soon moved to London, and from 1979 to 1984 worked as a staff photographer for Sounds, for which he provided countless front covers. During those five years he covered Blondie, David Bowie, Devo, Joy Division, Bryan Ferry, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, The Specials, Wham!, ABC, Edwyn Collins, The Associates and many, many more. Harry’s London flat also became home to fellow Scots such as Aztec Camera, Orange Juice and the Bluebells. Relive the inky-fingered days of the 1980s music press.

Movie of the Week - Out There: Postcard Records
Thanks to Kyle, we have a full slate of Scottish music-related docs on the schedule for this weekend. We get things off on the good foot with this television doc about Postcard Records.
Postcard was a Glasgow-based independent record label founded by
Alan Horne & Edwyn Collins in 1979, as a vehicle for Orange Juice and Josef K releases.
The label's motto was "The Sound of Young Scotland", a parody/tribute to
the Motown motto, "The sound of young America." Although short-lived, Postcard was to prove a key influence on the C86 indie-pop movement.
The label's first release was
Orange Juice's, "Falling and Laughing", which was jointly financed by
Horne and band members Edwyn Collins and bassist David McClymont, and
was released in the spring of 1980.The label went on to sign such bands
as Aztec Camera and The Go-Betweens, before becoming bankrupt in 1981.
Horne resuscitated Postcard in 1992, but they didn't last much longer the second time than they did the first. Edwyn Collins recently started using the cat-with-drum logo as his own in tribute to his own history.

Edwyn Collins: New album & film news
Collins is also involved in the making of a promising looking film called In Your Voice, In Your Heart, and it's the story of Edwyn’s journey back from his life threatening illness seven years ago. As the filmmakers say on their site, "Blurring the line between fiction and documentary we explore the world of Edwyn’s subconscious – a place inhabited by fragmented ideas and forgotten memories. Each story Edwyn tells is another piece of a shattered identity we gradually see re-emerging in front of us." Watch the trailer, and listen for the acapella verse from Orange Juice's "Dying Day" sung by Edwyn near the beginning - it's simply spine tingling!

It's a Scottish thing, he's a Scottish man

Lots & lots of Davy Henderson action going on around certain quarters. First of all, his fourth band within the last 30 years, Sexual Objects (following Fire Engines, Win, and Nectarine No.9), has just released their debut album, Cucumber. It's currently available via iTunes (US here, UK here).

Recently RPM/Cherry Red Records reissued Win's second album, Freaky Trigger. The two Win album's have both been long out of print. Let's hope RPM is able to work out getting the first one, Uh! Tears Baby, back in print as well.

And lastly, Friend of the Blog(©) Kevin, over at Your Heart Out, has just posted an excellent appreciation of Davy and Nectarine No.9's incredible Saint Jack album. Saint Jack was originally released way back in 1995 on the short lived second version of the Postcard label, and has recently been reissued digitally via the new digital-arm of the Creeping Bent label, We Can Still Picnic. Dada With Juice - Orange Juice to release box set

Isn't that a beautiful record cover? It's the artwork for Orange Juice's third (and last) full length release, The Orange Juice, from 1984. Today, Domino Records announced the upcoming release of Coals To Newcastle, a six disc + one DVD boxed set of everything OJ ever released plus! This may be the first time the band's entire discography has been available at once since the mid 80's.

The release will be comprised of six audio compact discs and one DVD that will contain the band’s complete discography and other studio recordings as well as a collection of their BBC sessions. The DVD will contain the band’s two promotional clips for “Rip It Up” and “What Presence?!” (the latter directed by Derek Jarman), their four performances on The Old Grey Whistle Test and the rare posthumous concert video Dada With (The) Juice. In total, Coals To Newcastle includes 16 previously unreleased tracks with another 23 tracks previously unavailable digitally on earlier re-issues.
As a taster, I present for a your enjoyment below a youtube playlist comprised of all the videos that made up the Dada With Juice VHS collection. You can never have enough Juice.

Edwyn Collins - Home Again documentary
According to wikipedia, this was originally broadcast in May 2008, and is narrated by Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos. It follows Edwyn's progress in recovering from his illness, and his first return to live performance at the BBC Electric Proms on October 31, 2007. I was lucky enough to see him a few weeks later at the Theatre Arts Club in London, on Nov. 19.

Falling and Laughing - the Restoration of Edwyn Collins

Enough fucking death already...lets check out a story about making it! Surviving! A feel good story.
I'm surprised I haven't heard a little more buzz about this, but here we are. I'm more than a little excited to read Falling & Laughing: The Restoration of Edwyn Collins, a brand new book about Edwyn Collins and his recent bout of surviving a stroke, brain haemorrhages, and MRSA to top it all off. Unbelievable. Spoiler alert: he lives! He thrives! The book was written by Grace Maxwell, Edwyn's longtime partner & manager, and will be out in the UK on July 9. This story is why I flew over to London in November 2007 for a long weekend specifically to see Edwyn play. It was a miracle that he was even close to a stage.
No news yet on a US edition, here's the description from Amazon UK:
Product Description
In February 2005, Edwyn Collins suffered two devastating brain haemorrhages. He should have died. Doctors advised that if he did survive, there would be little of him left. If that wasn't enough, he went on to contract MRSA as a result of an operation to his skull and spent six months in hospital. Initially, Edwyn couldn't speak, read, write, walk, sit up or feed himself. He had lost all movement in his right side and was suffering from aphasia - an inability to use or understand language. When he initially recovered consciousness the only words he could say were 'Grace', 'Maxwell', 'yes' and 'no'. But with the help of his partner Grace and their 18-year-old son Will, Edwyn fought back. Slowly, and with monumental effort, he began to teach his brain to read and speak all over again - with some areas of his mind it was if he had been a slate wiped utterly clean. Through a long and arduous road of therapy he began to re-inhabit his body until he could walk again. Grace's story is an intimate and inspiring account of what you do to survive when your husband is all but taken away without warning by a stroke.
About the Author
Grace Maxwell was born in Lanarkshire. She moved to London in 1980, where she met Edwyn Collins. Since 1984 she has been his manager and partner. Together they have an 18-year-old son, Will. They live in London and East Sutherland. Edwyn Collins sold his stamp collection at the age of 16 to buy a guitar and never looked back. In the early 80s his band, Orange Juice were the first act on the now legendary Postcard Records label. His wonderful songs, dandy looks and cultured wit made him an idol of the burgeoning indie scene. With Orange Juice and as a solo artist he has released a total of nine albums including Gorgeous George, that contained the worldwide hit 'A Girl Like You', and most recently Home Again.

Orange Juice in the news!

From the Glasgow Sunday Mail: Music legends Orange Juice together again 26 years after split:
THE legendary Orange Juice are getting back together for the first time in 26 years to
receive a top music award. The band will get together next month to be honoured by
Nordoff-Robbins Scotland. It will be an emotional reunion after singer Edwyn Collins almost died from a brain haemorrhage in 2005.
The charity raises money to fund music therapists and Edwyn benefited from Nordoff-
Robbins' painstaking work during his long road to recovery. Edwyn, 49, said: "I'm very
flattered. It's all part of the renaissance of Orange Juice. I have fond memories of the band and am looking forward to seeing them all again." The original Orange Juice line-up - Edwyn, bassist David McClymont, guitarist James Kirk and drummer Steven Daly - formed in 1979.
Over three years they released four singles, Falling And Laughing, Blue Boy, Simply
Thrilled Honey and Poor Old Soul, on indie label Postcard Records. Their debut album You Can't Hide Your Love Forever peaked at No.21. The band have influenced hundreds of
acts such as The Smiths, Franz Ferdinand and Belle And Sebastian.
David, 48, said: "Orange Juice were a dysfunctional bunch of people whose career was a
roller-coaster ride. "We went from being an act nobody was interested in to one of the
biggest indie bands in the UK. "We really needed a level-headed manager but, if
anything, Postcard founder Alan Horne was even crazier than we were. It took years for
me to realise I'd been part of something so important musically. "Now with the
endorsement of Franz Ferdinand it's almost come full circle. It's the end of a journey in a way." Steven said: "Orange Juice set rolling a multi-million pound industry and completely reshaped Glasgow's self image. That wasn't easy.
"We were self aware enough to realise our records were making history."
David met Edwyn at Glasgow College of Printing in 1977. Steven and James had been
school mates at Bearsden Academy. David said: "When I first saw Edwyn I thought he was
an interesting looking guy. He asked me to join his band even though I couldn't play an instrument. "He taught me bass guitar two weeks before our first gig at Glasgow School of Art on April 20, 1979."
Steven, 48, had spotted Edwyn on a Glasgow bus a year earlier. Steven said: "He was reading Melody Maker - the wrong thing to do at the time - but he was wearing a Buddy Holly badge. I thought he looked pretty cool.
"He played me his record collection. It was full of Velvet Underground, Nico and David
Bowie." It will be the first time the band have been together since 1982. They were
devastated when Edwyn fell ill three years ago. He battled back to health and released solo album Home Again last year.
David said: "It's amazing what he's achieved since his illness. That's why it's important for us to get together."
James and Steven had left by the time the band had their biggest hit Rip It Up in 1983. The reunion will bring back fond memories. Steven said: "In 1981, we played the
Bungalow Bar in Paisley, supported by Aztec Camera. "We were getting great national
press but had no idea if anybody in Glasgow even cared. "We rolled up and saw hundreds
of art school kids queuing outside. That's when I knew something was happening."
Joe Aitken of award sponsor Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said: "Orange Juice are
fantastic ambassadors for the city, both as musicians and style icons. We're delighted to recognise one of Scotland's greatest bands." THE original line-up of Orange Juice have not been on stage together since splitting in 1982. Here we catch up on what they have been doing since then.
JAMES KIRK
WROTE two of Orange Juice's most famous songs - Felicity and Wan Light.
When the guitarist and drummer Steven left Orange Juice in 1982, they formed a new
group called Memphis and released one single, You Supply The Roses.
He wrote songs with Paul Haig and The Independent Group before leasing a solo album,
You Can Make If You Boogie, in 2003. James later quit the music business and is now a
chiropodist with a actice in Glasgow.
STEVEN DALY
IN 1989, Steven moved to New York where he lives with wife Kirsten. They are expecting
their first child in January. He is a contributing editor for US glossy Vanity Fair and travels the world on assignments. Steven has interviewed Madonna, David Beckham, Jim Carey and Johnny Depp. He said: "I interviewed Becks while he played for Real Madrid. "Posh - who was wearing just a pink bikini - lay on a towel just 12 feet from me sunbathing during our chat at their Spanish home."
DAVID McCLYMONT
IN 1984, David - of Girvan - emigrated to Australia where he lives with wife Janet near Melbourne. He is a writer for the respected Lonely Planet travel guides and played bass with Kylie Minogue on an Aussie TV pop show. David, 49, said: "I moved to Australia to escape the music business. I didn't realise Orange Juice were famous 11,000 miles from home. "Sydney was full of Postcard Records' obsessives so I suddenly got invited to a lot of dinner parties and it opened many doors for me."
EDWYN COLLINS
NOW lives in London with wife and manager Grace and their teenages on William.
He wrote Rip It Up which reached No.8 in the charts in 1983. It was to be Orange Juice's biggest hit when they continued with a new line-up. When the group disbanded two years later, he pursued a solo career which included hit 1994 single A Girl Like You, later covered by Rod Stewart. He is also a record producer having worked on albums by The Proclaimers and The Cribs. Earlier this year, Edwyn played his first UK concerts since his illness.
Also from the Glasgow Sunday Mail: Rock star Edwyn Collins is coming home to play his first gigs in Scotland since suffering a devastating brain haemorrhage.
The ex-Orange Juice singer hasn't performed here since collapsing in 2005.
But I can exclusively reveal Edwyn has confirmed shows at Edinburgh Queen's Hall on April 21 and Glasgow's Oran Mor the following night.
The singer said: "It will be very emotional in Glasgow because that's where Orange Juice recorded their first record Falling And Laughing. Continued here.
