Grace Jones - Hammerstein Ballroom

Man, do I hate the Hammerstein. They ought to fit it out with a decent sound system and a stage high enough to suit the room. Anyway, Grace Jones performed last night to a ROUSING reception from the packed house. Not bad...

Woodstock memories

Photographer Bill Eppridge has a wonderful slideshow over on the NY Times website today along with his commentary. The closer we get to the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival, the more we'll see this sort of thing. That's alright with me. Photographs Copyright 2009 Bill Eppridge. All Rights Reserved.

Bande à part: New York Underground 60’s 70’s 80’s

Originally published overseas a couple of years ago, and touring internationally since as a gallery exhibition, the wonderful photography collection Bande à part will finally see the light of day here in the US in September thanks to Gingko Press.

A comprehensive expose of the New York Underground in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Bande à parte is a collection of photographs taken by those who were the eyes in the darkness, the insiders among the outsiders of art.

What distinguishes this group is that they are not professionals in the sense that taking pictures wasn’t really a job, it was a compulsion, something they had to do. Billy Name was a major domo at the silver Warhol Factory, Gerard Malanga was a poet and Warhol’s painting assistant, Danny Fields was a mover and shaker in the record business, responsible for the management of such talents as Iggy and The Stooges, The Doors and The Ramones. Even those who were photographers by trade were not the kind who waited for assignments, they were self-taught anthropologists who wanted to document their time, their place. And clearly, these pictures tell their stories better than words ever could.

Features photographs by Lee Childers, Billy Name, Anton Perich, Maripol, Roberta Bayley, Godlis, Bobby Grossman, Danny Fields, Stephanie Chernikowski, Marcia Resnick, and Gerard Malanga.

It can be pre-ordered from Amazon right here.

New Order and Ike Yard 1981

Here's great bit of ephemera courtesy of our friends over at Cerysmatic Factory. From November 19, 1981, its a flier for one of the earliest of New Order gigs in the US with support by New York's own Ike Yard at the Ukrainian National Home. Its extremely rare & no one really knows how many exist.

The gig was filmed and released as the FACT 77 Taras Shevchenko video by Factory Records. The poster design was a collaboration between Michael Shamberg (head of Factory's US operations) and Ike Yard's Stuart Argabright.

With all due respect to the parties involved, is it any wonder I rarely buy new records? If you have to ask...

We're Livin' On Dog Food

Keep an eye out for this new documentary on the all too often ignored Australian punk & post punk music scene. From director Richard Lowenstein comes "We're Livin' On Dog Food." Rowland S. Howard, the Primitive Calculators, Ollie Olsen, Phillip Brophy and many others offer their recollections, and air their animosities, in a tribute to those seminal times. The Crystal Ballroom, the little bands, the Boys Next Door, drugs, fashion, sharehousing and a previously unseen interview with Michael Hutchence. All this and the making of the Australian cult classic, 'Dogs In Space.'

The Tube - A Night In NYC

Big ups to Brian Turner over at WFMU who found this gem on YouTube.

The Tube was a great 80's pop show in the UK hosted by several folks including Jools Holland and Leslie Ash (as seen here). It ran from 1982-1987.

This episode finds them exploring the nightlife of New York in the 80's...from the looks of it, I'd guess it's 1983 or so. There's incredible footage as they hit Danceteria, the Roxy, and and all of the hot spots of the day. They speak to the clubgoers, the DJ's, producers...this is really a fantastic artifact! If you weren't there, but wish you were, this will give you a decent taste of it.

Knives In West Eleven

Thanks to Tim over at The Clash Blog for pointing out something I had missed on a few visits to the fabulous Jon Savage blog.

Savage's Punk London post, originally published in 2006, includes a beautiful set of stark black & white images he snapped in January of 1977 in West London - the formative stomping grounds of some of the Clash. Jump to the slideshow here. Stunning!

The Punk Art Catalogue

Hat tip to EV Grieve for the tip on the following:

Marc H. Miller, of 98Bowery.com, has made available online the Punk Art Catalogue. Originally put together in 1978 as part of the Punk Art Exhibition, Washington Project For The Arts, Washington, DC, 1978, it's really an incredible artifact, and deserves wide recognition as most likely the first ever punk based art & ephemera show.

"Every time Bettie and I headed north on Bowery towards the East Village, we passed a grungy bar that clearly had the feel of a happening scene. Curiosity pulled us into CBGB in 1976, and for the next three years the club was our regular haunt, a place we visited three or four times a week, meeting friends and absorbing inspiration as we watched the emergence of a new music and counter-culture scene that would soon spread around the globe. More than just a music revolution, punk also affected the visual arts, fashion and design. Under the sway of punk, our conceptual art grew and evolved in ways that reflected the style, content and marketing of the broader CBGB scene. Like a rock group, we were an art group, first billed as Miller & Ringma and then as Miller Ringma & Hoppe when Curt joined our collaboration. In 1978 we brought together the visual artists at CBGB by organizing the world’s first "Punk Art" exhibition in Washington DC. For us the punk years were fast, loud, and lots of fun."

Soul Power

If the news about the Soul Train DVD's excites you, you might also be interested in a new-ish documentary called Soul Power.

From the makers of When We Were Kings, Soul Power documents the concert that happened around the fight in Zaire that year between Muhammad Ali & George Foreman. The so called "Rumble In the Jungle."

"A partial list, in alphabetical order, of the reasons to see “Soul Power” might go as follows: James Brown, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, B. B. King, Miriam Makeba, the Spinners and Bill Withers. A partial list, as I say, of performers captured with remarkable sonic brilliance and visual immediacy on an outdoor stage in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Congo), in 1974." Continued here.

Popcorn!

Soul Train is coming to DVD. Popcorn! Gotta have a mutha fo' me.

Richard Hell to release new version of Destiny Street

According to the Guardian, Richard Hell is set to release a new version of his second album, Destiny Street, originally released in 1982.

"At the time of the original recording I was so debilitated by despair and drug-need that I was useless," Hell said. "The record ended up being a high-pitched sludge of guitar noise. It was a shame because the songs were clean, simple, and well-constructed, but those values were sabotaged by the inappropriate arrangements and production."

It sounds like he's gone & used the original rhythm tracks, and with the help of guitarists Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot and original Voidoid Ivan Julian, has cleaned everything up. Original guitarist Robert Quine passed away in 2004.
