The Replacements live in 1981

If you're looking to kill some time over this holiday break, have a look at this gem - the Replacements live in Minneapolis in September 1981. Not just one song, but their entire set! Thanks to Slicing Up Eyeballs for the tip. Use the left/right arrows below to skim thru the set.

Rowland S. Howard RIP

Rowland S. Howard - RIP. Why is this time of year always so tough with news like this?

Here's Rowland & Lydia Lunch with their version of Lee Hazelwood's "Some Velvet Morning":

And here's a groovy video shot in 1981 for the Birthday Party's "Nick the Stripper":

Ephemera Friday - The Clash

The Clash on Christmas Day, 1979. Only 50p! Image courtesy of the Clash Blog.

The Junky's Christmas by William Burroughs

A couple of blogs I read posted this short film, and I thought I would too. Be grateful...it could be you. It originally appeared in 1993, and was produced by Francis Ford Coppola. It's available on DVD. Photo above by me, Feb. 2008. Pay no attention to the part numbers - it's all here.

Have a Fela holiday!

Funny...someone just sent this to me not knowing that I received a pair of tickets to see the show for christmas. Click here for some holiday greetings from Fela!

Holiday visuals by Godlis

I wanted to share with you this image sent out this year by one of my favorite photographers, Godlis. This is a New York Santa, circa 1993, showing us how to cross the street, New York-style. Click on it for the bigger view. See more at Diary of A Lunatic Photographer.

Back to basics

I realize it's a bit late in the day to be making gift suggestions for christmas, but I wanted to mention this anyway. For my birthday last month I received this wonderful old fashioned portable record player. It's made by Crosley, looks great and sounds good enough.

I have two turntables set up already, but due to my current living arrangements, the listening pleasure I derive from either of them is usually mediocre at best. However this player has simplified things so much, I'm actually managing to listen to all of the odd & amazing things I pick up at yard & garage sales that have been piling up for ages. It's so easy...all I have to do is open it, turn it on & play the record. It's not exactly high fidelity, but it's a hell of a lot of fun. And it's small enough to pretty much fit anywhere. I'm really looking forward to the spring & summer when I can take it outside.

There's quite a selection to be made of available turntables, and prices are pretty reasonable. View them here.

The Runaways movie

This trailer, or at least news of this film, has been floating around for a while. Thanks to Joly for the reminder. Coming this spring is this biopic about the Runaways:

p.s. Hey Ed - I managed to post it in the correct size!

This is what IT'S about

If you haven't seen the Anvil movie yet do not wait another second. Whether or not you're into heavy metal music is completely besides the point. I watched it for the second time last night and just can't recommend it enough. Talk about sticking to your guns, self belief, not giving up...knowing whats important in life...these guys are it. It's a completely inspirational story. It's also funny as hell. Sort of a real life Spinal Tap in some respects.

After I saw the film for the first time (which includes folks like Slash & Lars Ulrich talking about the band), I turned to my friend Russ and said that one of those guys should put their money where their mouth is & take Anvil out on tour. AC/DC stepped up did just that sometime earlier this year. And now it seems the band has a pretty busy itinerary...they'll be at Irving Plaza here in NYC on January 15. I just might be as well.

Higher: The Story of Sly Stone - yet another Sly doc! Also due sometime in 2010...

I'm the face, baby, is that clear?

Wow! Quite a find here...Rock Explosion in London is offering these wonderful shots of a baby faced Who in action in 1964 at the Railway Hotel. They are available in 16 x 20 prints hand printed from the original negatives. The photographer is not named. Absolutely stunning!

Glen Matlock at Nublu

Here's Glen Matlock performing Pretty Vacant last Friday at Nublu. More videos available to watch right here. Did anyone go? From the looks of the video it didn't look as packed as I imagined it would be. I was just getting home from a wedding around the time Glen was supposed to go on...

The Beat Hotel documentary

"The Beat Hotel, a new film by Documentary Arts, goes deep into the legacy of the American Beats in Paris during the heady years between 1957 and 1963, when Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky and Gregory Corso fled the obscenity trials in the United States surrounding the publication of Ginsberg’s poem Howl. They took refuge in a cheap no-name hotel they had heard about at 9, Rue Git le Coeur and were soon joined by William Burroughs, Ian Somerville, Brion Gysin, and others from England and elsewhere in Europe, seeking out the “freedom” that the Latin Quarter of Paris might provide."

Visit the film's official website here. Read the book by Barry Miles: The Beat Hotel: Ginsberg, Burroughs & Corso in Paris, 1957-1963

Anarchy on Avenue C

Word has it (although I'm not sure how reliable it is) that Sex Pistol's bassist & songwriter, Glen Matlock, will be playing an acoustic gig at the tiny Nublu on Avenue C between 4th & 5th Streets next Friday, Dec. 11. I've sent a note to the man himself - we'll see what he says. Stranger things have happened. According to his website, he is out & about doing acoustic shows and will be in Canada just prior to the 11th.

Dec 4, 2009

Blow Up the USA

London's long running club, Blow Up, will be throwing a couple of rare Stateside parties next weekend. Friday the 11th they'll be in NYC at 200 Orchard Street. Saturday, Dec. 12th, they'll jump westward to hit Clubhouse 24 in Sacramento. Click here for more info.

Besides the club, there is also the very groovy Blow Up record label. In fact, they put out one of my all time favorite compilations, Blow Up A-Go-Go!: Dancefloor Classics From The Legendary Blow Up Club (pictured above), which I never DJ without. Besides that, they've released fantastic sides from the Bongolian, Big Boss Man, and many others.

If you're into an uptempo-funky-mod vibe these are artists worth checking out. And of course the parties!
